  • Joe Wylie,

I love that song *so much*, like a crazy embarrassing gushy amount . . .

Know what you mean. Best experienced in the dark, in case one happens to dribble.

Unfortunately I was three for most of 1978, so my concert-going was fairly limited...

Thanks for reminding me that there's an upside to being old.

  • Isabel Hitchings,

I expressed truthfully how much I loved it you would probably back away from me nodding and smiling and hoping I didn't go for your jugular.

Or possibly embrace you like a sister? He did perform STS at some dates on the Reality tour so I had hopes but we got a more stadiumy show (possibly due to being in a stadium?)

  • Danielle,

:) Hell, I'll just indulgently quote my own blog post from 2004: 'Obviously this is the kind of dorky thing you freak out about while wearing headphones, but six minutes and ten seconds into 'Station to Station', after the first 'it's not the side effects of the cocaine' couplet, after the first 'it's too late', enters a fucking tambourine of JOY. And later on, there are handclaps. And that wacky electronic drum-fill thingy. In fact, all ten-odd minutes keep getting better and better and better until you're kind of surprised by the song ending at all.'

Thanks for reminding me that there's an upside to being old.

When is someone going to invent that concert-going time machine I've always wanted, dammit? I have such plans!

  • ScottY,

I only just watched the Letterman segment with John Key in it.

My God it just wasn't funny. And with Key grinning like a buffoon it was embarrassing and painful.

And could someone please stuff a microphone down the throat of that annoying twat Shaffer.

  • Simon Grigg,

The lowered lighting and sound-tower speaker-jumping during the intro to Station to Station confounded the sense of scale

Yeah it seemed to go on forever..that wonderful intro, then, as he came on the sun set behind him and those neon strips behind him lit up. Ohhhh....

At least I think that's how it went.....

Best Western Springs ever, IMO (not that I've suffered one for many a year).

I have a couple of other stories about DB on that tour too, but a forum like this likely isn't the best place to share them.

Then again, substances may well have enhanced the experience.

Marley is mostly more of a haze than Bowie sadly but the biggest blur was the bloody Doobie Bros (yes, yes I know) circa 75. I feel asleep 1 song in, and woke in the encore thinking it was still he same song, until someone pointed out it was time to go.

Am I late to suggest Maria Pia's? It really is quite fabulous

As good as in Milan? By the way are you there yet and did you get held up by the red dust over Oz?

  • Geoff Lealand,

On DB. For a while there I had a version of him doing "Life on Mars" with Arcade Fire (which is essentially a double dose of wonderful). But it doesn't appear on iTunes listings anymore. Anyone know anything about it?

Maria Pia's is a fabulous restaurant, and yes it would more than hold its own over here as well, in the mould of the Ambasciatori in Quistello - a restaurant who got its full allotment of stars from the Michelin guide by asking the local grandmothers for their recipes. I'm very fond of that cuisine indeed, and Maria Pia is a brilliant exponent (her book is good too).

I did indeed get to Milan in spite of a bumpy ride followed by uncertainty on whether we'd be able to land in Sydney along the way.

Aha - Glass Spider and (I think the one you saw would have been) Sound+Vision were the ones he hated doing so he probably was all grumpy.

The poor dear, just as well I didn't pay for the tickets on account of the fact I didn't feel like it.

(Yes, it was the Sound+Vision tour btw.)

  • Isabel Hitchings,

Beautiful 3410 but it doesn't make me want that time-machine any less.

I've always like where it goes

Once there were mountains on mountains
And once there were sunbirds to soar with
And once I could never be down
Got to keep searching and searching
Oh, what will I be believing and who will connect me with love?

and the whole song just lifts up.

  • Craig Ranapia,

I fully expected John Key to announce the opening of NewZealandTown at the end, it was that bad. Four was funny though.

jeebus... we're talking about fraking Letterman -- where the only qualification for joining the writing staff is being about as funny as a battery acid douche. Anyone who comes out of that black hole with a micron of dignity is a big ball of win in my book.

There's a quote somewhere where he says he basically got through that tour by counting the days until he never had to sing Space Oddity ever again.

Oh, and songs about technology? If someone hasn't mentioned The Mutton Birds' The Heater, I'll be very disappointed. :)

    Air - Electronic Peformers

    We are the syncronizers
    Send messages through time code
Midi clock rings in my mind
    Machines gave me some freedom
    Synthesizers gave me some wings
They drop me through twelve bit samplers
    We are electronic performers
    We are electronics

I also concur. Not sure whose idea it was to do the show, but what did they really expect? Key's personality was probably a good fit, whereas some of our other PMs would have been a disaster.

  • Adrian Humm,

The 'Technology Themed Songs' discussion seems to be fizzling out. But I had to mention Television by The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. Watching the "news" on Nightline tonight reminded me how far we haven't come since Michael Franti released this song.

To be fair, most fans of such music are probably occupied listening to it right now. Or old and asleep. <ducks>

Did the early Ultravox hit I Want to be a Machine get a mention?

I Want to be a Machine

Good stuff, and, coincidentally (or maybe not), rather Space Oddity-esque.

Re lunch in Wellington, if you have transport or feel like catching a bus or train, Bella Italia in Nevis Street Petone is an Italian experience.

Agreed. Maria Pia's gets my vote for one of the best restaurants in Wellington. If only I could afford to go more often!
