Raybon Kan wouldn’t be part of the Auckland pseudo-celeb media in-crowd though, would he?
Quite, LegBreak. Or the Old Boys' Club which, as Russell has noted before, sees Paul Holmes (apprently) able to get a major metropolitan daily to basically publish a PR piece at his behest.
Ridge generally comes across as a bit of a dick, but on this particular issue he seems to be the only one prepared to break ranks.

Well, does anyone else remember when David Benson-Pope authorised a staff member to selectively (and misleadingly) "brief" the Herald on Sunday on the contents of the Police report into certain allegations made against him before it was publicly released?
I think that's quite a good comparison.

Oh, and rather late notice, but we have an afternoon record for Media7 tomorrow.
The panel's a cracker: Finlay Macdonald, Linda Hallinan (editor of New Zealand Gardener) and Wendyl Nissen talking about the magazine market, trends, and how it's bearing up in recessionary times.
We'd need people there at The Classic by 2pm and probably be done by 3pm. Click that little envelope next to my name if you'd like to come ...

In some ways I still find this whole situation to be disproportionate - don't get me wrong, I don't approve of domestic assault of any kind, but the ramifications and speculation on this case are insane.
Perhaps (probably) Team Veitch did release the summary of facts to the media, but I still see that as a fair response in some ways. Up to this point all the details we've heard of the case (kicked down the stairs, broken back, in a wheelchair for months, lost job because of injury) have originated (at least in perspective) from Dunne-Powell's side. Veitch has been unable to offer any alternatives. In releasing the police summary they get a chance to refute, in some small way, some of the allegations, and the hinted allegations. No mention of 'down the stairs', some details on the other 'Male assaults Female' events.
Kicking someone isn't cool or alright, but how many other 'normal' people have done similar or worse and never face anything like the outcome that Veitch has. Business professionals, sports people even.

I just have a hard time attributing any of these rumours to one 'side' or another.
Most of what has been said, and then repeated in the media is no more than speculation and assumption.
I think that by saying something comes from the 'Dunne-Powell side' we are inferring that she somehow has involvement and therefore are as at fault as any of the media organisations.
There is no public good in this, just dubious public interest and that can be attributed to the general ambulance chasing nature of so many of us. -
Ooh, one of my Twitter friends has just provocatively posted the names of the two murder accused in his Twitter feed!

Linda Hallinan (editor of New Zealand Gardener)
Qantas Supreme Best Magazine winner... of our hearts.
(Seriously, if there's a magazine that beats NZ Gardener, I have yet to find it.)

Cue nerdy discussion about whether saying something on your twitter feed is actually an internet publication ...
On reflection, what Harvey seems to be trying for here, given the ages of the people involved, is to address the Bebo effect: to try and damp down what he regards as the unhelpful effect of social chatter about matters that will eventually come before the courts.
Not sure it'll work though ...
-
Here we go again. Dylan, please go and read the comprehensive previous discussion about this.
Veitch has had more than enough opportunity to clear his name if he had wanted to - and instead all we got was whining from him and his supporters club about how much of a victim he has been.
-

I don't think so. I don't see the Dunne-Powell's PR company (and I fully accept that this is a case where both sides are well-advised to have representation) acting with anything like the intensity of Veitch's. Glenda Hughes knows what she's doing, and three weeks in a row of stories (some of them clearly aimed at making D-P look like a vengeful blackmailer) in every Sunday paper isn't accidental.
Veitch is the one who keeps repeating the line that there are "two sides to the story". He had a chance to explain his but, perhaps understandably, didn't do so. He wasn't obliged to. But now claims will go before a court, as they should have originally. Unfortunately, the bringing of charges seems to have been the cue for a new level of PR activity.
-
I note also the 'kicked down the stairs' angle seems to have died?
Mebbe. We don't actually know that the police evidence has been sighted by anyone but the cops or Team Veitch. Which is the problem.
-
It has the smack of experiment to me, as if Harvey has identified a real problem -- the internet never forgets, even if you're not convicted -- and decided to try a "solution".
Methinks the Judge is making law all by himself. A suppression order is one thing, since it protects the name of the accused in all media, but an Iternet ban is another. It gives privilege to the print media, which can then charge the customer to release the information - I notice the Herald article says buy tomorrow' s Herald to find out the names. Correspondingly, the ban discriminates against free, unmediated conversations on Internet.
And of course the ban is quite unworkable.
-

Is it a ban on any internet publication? I ask because the news story only said he banned "news websites".
Ahhh, I see that's now been updated to "online media" which presumedly covers any form of publication on the net. That's a different kettle of fish to only blocking news websites... -
That's so weird, I was just reading a tutorial called THROWN DRINK... it's for 3DS MAX and explains how to animate a drink thrown from a glass using Particle Flow and Blobmesh surfaces.
-

It's the conversations he wants to suppress. I do find it interesting. This isn't some guy who has his secretary print out his emails.
-

No you're weird ;-)

That's an interesting perspective on it Paul. I wonder if the traditional media, who have the money to challenge these sorts of things in court, are going to do so, or do so as aggressively as they would if if they were shut out.
-
Damn fools, the lot of them. They should have gone to the police when it happened.

drama-queenish<quote>
ha ha - agreed.
<quote>He's been charged with a serious offence, and will be afforded the full rights, privileges and protections as anyone else. He might actually do himself a few favours if he (on the QT) told his more vocal fans to STFU, but that's just me.
agreed.

oops damn <quote> damnit LOL

It's all gone down in a very weird way I think.
Generally it feels like the things we heard, especially in the early weeks, were perhaps exaggerated at least. Hence it seems to appear to have been presented from the complainant's perspective. I certainly don't think it was 'front footing' the thing.
I don't think Veitch ever really did have an opportunity to put forward his side of the events, to do so would be self-incriminating, especially given that his public statements were before he was charged with a crime.
It will be interesting to see what happens between now and the trial, whenever that may be.
-
I think I heard a wee bird say the class A Veitch kicking trial will be in the same week fatty Field the Labour MP goes down for slavery charges.
What is happening across the ditch? -
Dylan, what Sacha said, about our previous rather lengthy discussion. If the original claims were exaggerated does that make it ok? Did Veitch not have an opportunity to put his side of the story at the media conference he did (remember that, the one with the "no excuses except to say"?) or perhaps in the appalling Holmes interview in the HoS (which a number of people, including myself, blogged about the terribleness of at the time)?
Yes it will be interesting to see what happens between now and the trial. What I'm seeing so far is evidence that rather reinforces a lot of the discussions had in that so far from trivial thread Sacha linked - particularly the stuff about violence of the kind alleged not just springing fully formed from the head of Veitch (did you catch it Craig?)
And yes I am grumpy tonight.
-
(did you catch it Craig?)
Um, yes I did and I also think I'm missing something. Please enlighten me, Julie.
