Rather belatedly caught up with the Starbucks 'debate'.
It matters? Coffee? Coffee matters?
it seems when it comes to plonking, your average PA subscriber is on a par with Nathan Field. -
Danielle, in reply to
So, you’re here to endear yourself to one and all? Nice start.

Nathan Field
Eh?

Stephen McCurdy, in reply to
Well no, actually. I thought PA had a little more to it. Than, eg, plonking about coffee.

Oh dear, the secret's out: we sometimes make small talk. I bet if you po-facedly berate us some more, though, we'll magically start performing up to your expectations. That strategy *always* works.
(You, uh, see the other threads about terribly 'worthy' things like Egypt and the election and whatnot, right? Just checking.)

Sacha, in reply to
Feel free to weigh in on the other threads, Stephen. Russell might even be open to a guest post about cinematic music or some other interest.
And I've just been reminded who Nathan Field is (been a while) - thanks Danielle. #asyouwere

Totally off topic, proberbly ;-)
I am just trying to sort out a telecom mobile problem (they told me I had no credit and after I topped up I found that I had about 25% left, hmmmmm)

Steve Barnes, in reply to
instant coffee is actually more expensive than proper coffee.
Not if you count your own labour... hence instant.

Actually, left Laneways before they played as my back started to remind me standing up for 8 hours is for the kids.
Tell me about it, no really.... don't

I'm going to choose to celebrate the fact that you found the Internet. Welcome, I think you will enjoy it.

To see this comment after reading recent posts on Emma's 'Giving me grief' this morning, and what that thread has, and will continue, to mean to me personally, and clearly to others here also, makes it all the more ridoculous.
Having flipped my own wig here recently, it's good to be reminded of the balance this place can provide.
Maybe we should do a wine tasting thread. That would really bring the Borg.

Oh dear, someone is not going to be at all pleased with the three posts I’ve got racked up to go live tomorrow morning… Is it OK to “plonk” about such trivia as Natalie Portman’s deeply cringe-inducing performance in Black Swan, why Americans keep going gaga over British royals like that revolution thingy never happened, and my big gay crush on Hailee Steinfeld?
Oh dear, the secret's out: we sometimes make small talk.
And sometimes we bitch, gossip, obsess about trivia, get very very silly and commit offences against taste, sanity and morals. Thank God for that.

Epic slapdown
-
Stephen McCurdy, in reply to
I recall noticing the internet just a bit after the war – surely an effective slapdown requires something more than speculative petulance, Sacha? Though I must say I didn’t see Giovanni’s comment as much of a slapdown at all. Perhaps I’m insufficiently po-faced. (I was sufficiently interested by his comments on the Hobbit farce to download his thesis a while ago. But whatever.)
Apropos your response about thirteen hours ago, I suspect any comment I might make about cinematic music might not be such a good idea. Look where talking about coffee got me. Apart from having pretty much lost interest in film music myself, I might inadvertently come up with some moderately well informed observation about the behaviour and ethics of various visual media private and public imperia, and run the risk of pissing Danielle off even more than I seem to have already.
Cheers.

Perhaps like this from Steeve Coogan against Top Gear's lazy racism?
Richard has his tongue so far down the back of Jeremy's trousers he could forge a career as the back end of a pantomime horse. His attempt to foster some Clarkson-like maverick status with his "edgy" humour is truly tragic. He reminds you of the squirt at school as he hangs round Clarkson the bully, as if to say, "I'm with him". Meanwhile, James May stands at the back holding their coats as they beat up the boy with the stutter.
...
Gentlemen, I don't believe in half-criticisms and this has nothing to do with my slow lap times. But, increasingly, you each look like a middle-aged punk rocker pogoing at his niece's wedding.

Yes, she hates it when people badmouth imperia. (By the way, if you've never been - lovely place.)
Look, I'm not sure what motivated you to come and complain that we talk about stuff that is of little significance, especially since you had to actually dodge more recently updated threads on grief, Egypt and politics to do so, but it is very Usenet ca. 1998 and it wasn't particularly endearing, or indeed productive, back then. If you want to contribute, contribute. If you want to berate, do it either more substantively or less tritely would be my advice.

That's some a-grade diss right there.

Oh, go on…
Haven’t seen Black Swan yet, but this sort of seemed apposite. -

Sheez, yeah, remember the last guy who badmouthed imperia around here? I don't even want to talk about what I did to him. Let's just say it wasn't pretty.

Could you make us an Imperia-list. Just so we know which ones to avoid.

Well, hello Stephen. What a start to a discussion!
Perhaps I’m insufficiently po-faced.
I certainly got that impression, but smiles are hard to find hiding behind words. They can often be found at the end, though. :))

Very.

Black Swan. Hmm. I look forward to Craig's appraisal but I have been interested in my beloved and my daughter's response. I thought that it was rather a thin tale, held together by Natalie Portman's performance. Her slippage into pyschosis seemed rather implausible but Josephine and Catherine Rose reckoned it rang true in respect of young girls, striving for perfection, smothering mothers and self-harm (the last a regular theme in Aronofsky's films?)
Post your response…
