  • Hamish,

We've been spoilt. A 23 - 11 victory over the winners of the six nations, is great by any standards. except our own, of course. sack the coach

Although the french camera-guys did their best to try and ruin the experience with all those stupid zoom-ins and slow-motion glow replays of people licking their lips. Seriously, what's with that?

That nifty wire-cam was a good idea, but whoever was operating the thing didn't have a clue what they were doing.

...those squished slo mo replays in the first half were just plain wierd. oh well, La vie en noir - we still showed them a thing or two on the field

back to the stadium (groan...) there's some new pretty pictures up now

Excuse me? I've read ad nauseum that if this stadium doesn't go ahead Auckland is condemned to being a third world backwater and international laughing stock ...

Could you point me to the direct quotes for that? Or were you exaggerating a bit?

My friend Big Gay Paul advised me that those sequences were in fact GayCam.

Too right Craig. The bed pan, doughnut, condom, glass turd (my own off the cuff contribution) and weeping writers do so much for calm rational analysis.

But hey, you go ahead and call us "yes" folks out for abuse of emotion.

  • Bart Janssen,

    Hi

I thought this thread died and I have no idea why I'm replying to someone with such a tagline but....

    Dear Insolent you said

You bloody socialists won't be satisfied until you have spent every dollar of the surplus on wasteful projects with no economic return as a justification for not giving us tax cuts.

In the first thread on the stadia I pointed out that the Lions tour generated ~$130 million increase in revenue for New Zealand as a whole. It is not too big a stretch to expect the 2011 world cup to generate close to $1 billion in revenue for NZ.

I accept that we will spend a lot upgrading stadia around NZ and in building a new stadium. But I seriously doubt anyone in treasury would describe the stadium as wasteful. It almost certainly will pay itself (from the perspective of the whole country) in 2011. And if it gets built in a place where it can have more use than just for rugby games (ie not at Eden park) then it will almost certainly continue to generate income for the city of Auckland and NZ as a whole well beyond 2011.

BTW it wasn't hard to find the info about revenue from the Lions tour and it doesn't take much thought to realise that the 2011 world cup has serious economic implications for a tourism-centric country like NZ. As a result your post comes across as rather foam flecked.

On a slightly different note - one thing that makes me sad about this whole deal is that no matter what happens we are likely to lose Eden park No2 which was starting to become a very pleasant place to watch cricket. If they upgrade Eden Park it will become a parking lot and if the build on the waterfront the folks at Eden Park have implied they'll have to sell the site to developers who will no doubt build more medium density ....er.... housing.

    cheers

  • Russell Brown,

The alternative for the waterfront stadium is not to create some new open-space design; the stadium is the only means to wrestle the land off the port.

Yup. Having perused Auckland Waterfront Vision 2040, it is my perception that there is no other way that Ports will be moved off that land. It actually says Captain Cook Wharf will remain in commercial use "for the foreseeable future".

I wish people like Keith Locke would actually acknowledge that when they sermonise about the despoiling of "Auckland's beautiful waterfront".

are you sure? I was under the impression we promised the irb a 60,000 seater as part of the deal??? this is an important point - anyone able to google this and find out?

"we promised the irb a 60,000 seater as part of the deal"

but a $50 million upgrade of Eden park was supposed to cater for that. Not sure if thats still considered practical tho.

Will eight times more people turn up for the world cup than the Lions tour? Where will they all stay? - they won't be spending much money if they're all sleeping in carparks.

Even if they did, that's only maybe $400million in extra tax revenue - so as taxpayers we're spending $600-1000 mln to make $400mln - doesn't sound like a very good deal to me!

build it and they will come

is actually not a too bad a way to conduct ventures. Why else would Gordon Ramsay sink $3 pound into his New York venture if he didn't want people to come.

Why have they built fantastic resaurants and a freaking ice climbing wall thousands of kilometers from the biggest population. Why do the ski fields continually add more services.

its simple build it and they will come, is a great way to envision progress. Of course we need to consider fesability studies etc, but we still need pie in the sky.

it's not envisioned that this one off event will pay for the whole deal. It's expected to draw income from events other than bloody thugby.

Overseas they have graduation services inside stadiums, why not on the waterfront (mind you this is Auckland we are talking about, take a brollie).

As I've said before, the BC Place stadium in Vancouver is used over 250 days of the year, not bad for a cold dark (somewhat in need of repair) place. We've got to take this into consideration when looking at future revenue streams for the stadium.

One amazing thing they do in Vancouver each summer is Shakespear on the waterfront, in the finest traditions of the Globe theatre with the backdrop of the setting sun behind the cast (in an open backed tent that is), magincal effect.

Come on start thinking laterally, god it's not hard. I for one would love to open a gelato stall on the walkway around it.

  • Nick Kearney,

"My soundings disclose that some of Brash's colleagues want to use the stadium controversy to cause the Government political embarrassment. Defeat the project and give Helen Clark another bloody nose, is how one National MP described the tactics."

Well that's not a very smart analysis by the Nats.

The blame won't fall on the MP's, rather they will make sure it falls on the councillors at both ARC and ACC level. Indeed, Hubbard is sitting like a lame duck on it at the moment: vote for it and lose your job next year; vote against it and lose your job next year. The way Mallard has been leaving it up to the 'councils' is very cunning. He will pointing the big finger their way if the faeces hits the extractor.

Come on Russell, you weren't there even though you may have had your spies.

The rhetoric came from noted architects and planners, an associate professor of law, city councillors, MP's, and also other illuminaries. It hardly 'defied reason'.

That is phenomenal!!! One event will nearly pay for the entire thing. Build it immediately. A soldout Alll Black test would generate anything from 10-20 million dollars on its own so in a few years its paid for and we actually have some of our waterfront back. It's making more sense by the day. And for the record.... Eden Park's revamp IS NOT BEING DONE FOR FREE OR BY THE NZRU!

i support the waterfront stadium but thought the choice of Dobbyn unnecssarily divisive. He's become a poltitical activist and many NZers disagree with his politics. As for his lyrics, I'd prefer Ellen DeGeneres' dancing.

    Hi Mike

we've already got the hosting rights , we dont need to 'build it and they will come ', they're already coming.

er no - the hosting rights are conditional on NZ providing at least one 60000 seat stadium for the final. Yes we could do it cheap but then we might just give the tourists the impression we are cheap (and nasty) and they might be less keen to spend time holidaying in our country.

All I'm saying though is this staium will in all likelyhood be paid for by the revenue that NZ gets from the 2011 world cup. Note that is from the perspective of the whole of NZ, I fully expect the actual shell company that is created to build manage and run the stadium will somehow make a huge loss and either demand to get govt or city money to recover from their "losses" or go bankrupt and not pay their staff (kinda cynical I know). But from a net NZ perspective this stadium will not cost NZ much at all and my guess is it will make GDP for NZ.

    cheers
    Bart

  • Bart Janssen,

    Hi Rich

Sorry didn't think I needed to do this part.

    $130 million in 2003 will double in 2011 dollars + $260 million

not 8 times as many people but probably twice as many people and yes we do have twice as many beds now and will probably have more by 2011 = $520 million

The world cup is twice as long as the Lions tour so people could be expected to stay longer = $1 billion

But the above properly belongs on the same envelope with the estimates of the stadium costs.

    Like I said it's a guess but I don't think it's an aweful guess.

    cheers
    Bart

I really think that's nonsense, Neil. The majority of New Zealanders don't care a fig about his politics (although the reception for the Dudes tour suggests an enduring affection for his music) and, as noted in this morning's Hard News, HM the Queen approved the song before it was performed. It's a complete and utter non-issue.

Moreover, I find the idea that his work as an artist should be muzzled because he has opinions and participates in civil society to be odious. You wouldn't like it if it happened to you.
