  • Robyn Gallagher,

Y'all need to ask Noizyboy about the scrapbooking programme he watches & recommends on the Living Channel.

OMG yes! I don't have Sky, but whenever I visit my parents, I watch it virtually non-stop. I have learned about "journalling", which equates to "writing shit in your scrapbook".

i still can't get used to Hughy L playing serious roles

Oddly enough, I cannot reconcile Greg House with Hugh Laurie. Maybe it's the American accent and stubble versus the clean-shaven Englishman. As far as I'm concerned, they're two separate people.

  • Hadyn Green,

I only ever watched one reality tv show. It was something about chefs and had Gordon Ramsey on it. Here's how much will power I had:

In order to show the TV who was boss I switched it off just before they announced who won. It felt incredibly freeing to know I really didn't care.

ps. we once caught a brilliant show on Sky Sport that was filler during a cricket match. It was called Crazy About Cars or something and the funniest hillbillies you ever did see

  • Ben Austin,

Robyn, I agree. On one hand I'm glad he has managed to make it big in another country and thus keep feeding his tribe of hungry orphans, on the other hand it does seem a rather strange end point for a fine British comedian.

End point? This may be just the beginning. Didn't he win a Golden Globe?

  • Nobody Important,

Why anybody would appear on such a television programme is a mystery to me.

Why anybody would blog on such a television programme is a mystery to me. I stopped in to see why but skipped to the end after the wart story (that was interesting) cos you lost me.

But each to their own I s'pose. I have zero interest in DWTS yet I'm a sucker for The Aprentice -- altho' my interest is more in watching how the producers/editors try to manipulate the audience. Anyone notice how last nights show had constant 'cut-aways' to the fat guy eating?

Nay, he was not merely 'eating' he was stuffing his big fat mouth!! I guess he won't be long for the chop.

Well, the common people are the most numerous source of groupies. Which is surely the whole raison d'etre of pop music.

    Surely?

Meanwhile - apologies, if you're like me you'l never hear most pop songs the same way again after this:

In your mind (or even as you sing lustily along), replace every occasion of the word "girl" or "girls" with "grill" or "grills".

    Works surprisingly well.

(Flat Bottomed Grills, they make the rocking world go round.")

  • merc,

Surely? Don't call me Shirley, but yes, I guess it is up to a point, as Schopenhaur said, these two things, fame and wealth, they will kill you, quicker than death, or some such thing and he was a very bitter man at the end. And I was Listening to The End, Doors, this morning as I drove to work...
I like, "And I believe in cats", a satire of that current Fallboy single, also I always replaced, "I wanna be adored", by Stone Roses with "I wanna be your dog", but Iggy actually got there first. Pop will eat itself, but the 3 minute single done well is a modern marvel and NZ does it best, IMHO.

Andy Warhol said 'if there's something you really, really want, and you get it... it drives you crazy'.
i think the references to common people are usually attempts faux egality and being on the side of the everyday people. corporates do it all the time.

Too true, the last thing a popstar really wants is "to sleep with common people, like you".

your... comments on Laws are accurate if not a little too forgiving. I had the same feeling for that short old guy who used to be on tv...

Fair point, Riddley. I found the whole thing so depressing that I admit to feeling rather sorry for Laws & Holmes. So I guess I pulled my punches a little when it came to describing their performances.

Actually, I was going to be even easier on Holmes, but then I remembered the unprovoked savaging he dished out to Vicki Hyde (NZ's best science writer, editor of ScitechDaily, and someone who's made a terrific contribution to the communication of science in this country).

But, even so, you're quite right. I was still rather soft on both Laws & Holmes.

So next time I write about Dancing with the Stars, I assure you, no more Mr Nice Guy from me.

  • Riddley Walker,

Yes, a little bit of memory helps with the not forgiving. Let's also not forget the Kofi Anan 'cheeky darkie' ratings attempt backfire fiasco and Holmes' subsequent attempts to feign contrition and claw back sympathy.
Hyde is an icon of calm and informed reason (no wonder Holmes felt so threatened by her), she should be nominated for an honour.

  • Nat Torkington,

    David:

I represent the "Michael Laws Does Not Look Like A Vagina" society. We are highly offended that your article continues to promote the myth that Wanganui's Mayor bears any resemblance to a certain organ of female anatomy.

We demand an apology, and have taken the liberty of drafting one on your behalf, as follows:

To the "Michael Laws Is Not A Vagina" society members, elected officials, and dignitaries:

I wholeheartedly apologize for my ill-informed comparison between the face of the illustrious former-Member, current mayor of Whanganui, and one-time mediocre-selling novelist, Michael Laws, and a trimmed vagina. Having spent literally hours investigating the matter online, through educational DVDs, and for two memorable hours in a local expert vagina facility, I realize and admit I was wrong and retract all such comparisons. Michael Laws's face looks nothing like a vagina, and you may quote me on that. If anything, it's like a strategically shaved scrotum and I say that not just because every time I see him on TV I scream "balls!". Many thanks for taking the time (and that of your estimable lawyers) to write and correct my misapprehension of this critical issue.

    Sincerely,

    David Haywood (PhD)

Watch you don't ignite any briodges - consider, your PA radio gig turns into PA TV. You become a top notch NZ celebrity. Your media career inevitably hits the skids.
