Derby is a fast sport with very technical rules, so watching it can take a few times before you get it. A bit like rugby.
Is there anywhere you can point me for the rules Hadyn? I looked on Wikipedia, but that only had a handful of them. I think there are rules regarding whats a legitimate pass which might clear up some of my misunderstandings regarding the score.
Which is a bit of a cop out I admit, but in a similar way, I've been following rugby for years and don't know why the whistle is blown half the time.)
Thats the analogy I was thinking of at the time, any newcomer to Rugby right now must have a nightmare understanding whats going on.
Its worse when you're there live - I was at the Lions Ranfurley shield loss and there's just no way you can see from that distance what is happening at the breakdown & thus why a penalty was awarded.
At Roller Derby you're closer, but everything happens so quick involving so many people an untrained eye can't pick anything out.

Points are announced, verbally and by hand signal, once the Jammer has cleared the pack.
That's something I am going to have to look out for at the next bout.

Another one that I thought was quite smart was "Suffer Jet gets my vote", which I was preparing to give a good cheer to, though it wasn't a contender in the end.
Yeah, if the MCs had actually looked at us I think we would have been a shoo-in for a prize, but then I did make the sign.
For me, the standout performer on the night was Punk Pantha (yes, even ahead of Suffer Jet), she really stepped it up. I've been really impressed by the massive improvements shown between bouts, can't wait for the next one. -

The AW's had an open training session in Porrirua from 2.30 - 5.30 yesterday, so most likely there was a media session after that. So instead of sending the reporter to a studio for a live cross, they'd do it in the field. Where the reporter was

I saw that last night, it was crazy! I saw the kid knocked off his bike and then Amy and I just stared as it got crazier and crazier.
And yes, TVNZ crosses live to shit all the time, including last night crossing live to a reporter in the TVNZ carpark on Lambton Quay putting groceries in her car.
I'm not joking.

I’d have thought the purpose of sending a reporter to training would be to get an insight on likely team and formation.
And to be a pedant, it would have been more relevant for him to stand outside TVNZ office in Central Wellington to check on the colour of his fingers rather than 25k away.

Only one more bout in the season Tom. Then Haydn can get back to dismissing cricket and reviewing sport uniforms. (Although if we're lucky we'll get a bonus post about the uniforms for the intercity bout.)
By the way, Field Theory is the place to come if you want to talk roller derby. Haydn is doing the sport a great service.

Exactly, and I like roller derby. There's plenty of time for cricket and rugby in our sports media. Some time for netball, a little less for football. And everything else can get fucked unless we become world champs (see: multisport, cycling). So if I can write about a (very very very) minority sport I quite enjoy, I'm going to keep doing it. Though I will admit that angles get harder to find with each bout.

I wouldn't even read this blog if he didn't talk about roller derby. My interest in rugby is minimal, the only international sport I tend to follow is cricket, which is well covered elsewhere, and I find Hadyn's taste in sports uniforms bland to the extreme (what do you make of the roller derby outfits, btw?).
And every sport had to start somewhere, I can just imagine people saying that football nonsense would never catch on.
Now if he would only talk about ultimate (a sport which was well represented in the audience last Saturday, I might add) occasionally... -
In the context of live sport in Wellington, Roller Derby probably isn't as minor as you think.
Given Brutal Pageant vs Smash Malice is essentially club level competition (and inter-city is coming up) as a point of comparison I wonder how many club rugby, football, basketball, netball, hockey, cricket etc games get 1000+ people along to.
Minor sports in Wellington would be things like the Rembuden Taikai for Kendo where competitors usually exceed spectators, or some of the local fencing and table-tennis tournaments.

I wonder how many club rugby, football, basketball, netball, hockey, cricket etc games get 1000+ people along to.
Some nights the Pulse would've loved 1000 screaming fans
