Ah the Fall. Never seen that vid before, so thanks Phillip. I couldn't quite see which stadium it is, but it says "made in Burnley" at the end which suggests Turf Moor.

Yep, Turf Moor according to the liner notes of the Perverted By Language 2CD re-issue.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

Here's the ad with the Feelers:

    - James Feeler has a very similar huskiness to Mike Jesus-Jones. Except he seems to have trouble with the high notes.
    - Oh look - a chap in a comedy sombrero.
    - "I saw the decade in wishing the world would change in the blink of an eye". This is relevant now because it is a new decade (just like the '90s was!!!)

  • UncleMike,

Damn, I was hoping for Op Shop doing "YMCA" or Kiri singing "My Boy Lollipop" hell even Mika doing "We Are The Champions" would have been better!
Yip Steve Allens "Join Together" (I have a mint copy for $25 if anyone wants it?) is lame but at least it was our lame. Right Here Right Now is their lamed relamed by us. Sad.

  • Caleb D'Anvers,

I'm with UncleMike on this one. Upper Hutt Posse performing Strangers Die Every Day. Smashproof doing a rousing rendition of John Cage's As Slow as Possible. HDU (feat. K'Lee) covering Teardrop. You can't help feeling that the RWC organizers have missed a whole gaggle of buses here.

Personally, though, I think the song of the World Cup should be Stereolab's "Crest":

"If there's been a way to build it, there'll be a way to destroy it!"

At the end of the tournament, they can let Aucklanders loose with sledgehammers to obliterate every last trace of the rushed, expensive, and useless development that will be built to accommodate this slow-motion clusterfuck of an event.

Maybe they're taking a leaf out of NZ Cricket's wildly successful 'play nothing released after 1990' policy at internationals.

I admit, I probably would have hated anything they came up with. But still...

They could have had Jacob doings aome post-rock aural soundscape and I would have been happy. Would have been epic of they had Yulia warbling over the top about mountains and farms and shit too, and it'd keep the suits happy.

Man, if we really were an ambitious country that supported innovation and vision, this would totally happen. Another missed opportunity!

Derty Sesh doing a version of Cage's 4' 33" wouldn't be uncalled for either.

I note that Martin Snedden (on morning Report today) said the song choice was driven by
their ad agency. Anyone know who that is?
And whether they have also used it in its
    prior placements?
Are they a local or overseas agency?
just wonderin', as it doesn't seem very creative...

    aaah, the blaggarts again...

This is now a meme: Any new announcement regarding the Rugby World Cup… We hate it.

An iron law of all Big Sports Events now. Being New Zealand, we get to grizzle about a song; in proper countries, with Really Big Sports Events, they protest about thousands made homeless to build stadia, or trillion dollar overruns. We're just not competing (yet ...).

But the most important thing to mock, as all students of Big Sports Events fans will know, is the Official Mascot. It is an unchanging ritual: the mascot will be unveiled, and it will be embarrassing (the name will be worse).

    So where's ours?

  • AndrewD,

Yesterday Snedden told me that it is not the "official song". That will always be World in Union as the IRB continues to strangle every dime they can while leaving all the risk with Kiwis.

This is purely the soundtrack to an ad for tickets. So we should all calm down and the sooner we buy all the tickets the sooner it will disappear. It's your responsibility as New Zealanders and music lovers.

  • Ben Howe,

I'm not a fan of the feelers but I don't think that is the real issue as that just a matter of taste. It is more about the fact that it is a non local composition that was chosen. local composition could potentially have generated decent royalties for a local artist.

It reminds me when they had the buy red socks to support NZ's America's cup bid, but turned out the socks were made in China.

That's the thing. They could easily have got a McGlashan or a Dobbyn or a Runga to write something to order.

Yes. I think Wammo has had the best alternative suggestion: Shihad's 'Run'. That would work.

Of course, I'd be happy with the noisy guitar part from 'Point That Thing Somewhere Else'. You could cut a montage to that sucka.

This is my main gripe as well. While The Feelers are bland, I can understand the NZRU chosing someone innocuous like them. But to deny the opportunity for an NZ songwriter to makecsome dosh is bad planning.

Aye, exactly. And thanks Robyn for posting the 1990 song. That was pretty bad wasn't it?

Shihad's 'Run' seemed like a strange suggestion to me until I rewatched it. How can the NRL not have picked that up for their annual song? That'd be all over a running contact sport advert.

  • Donald Reid,

Was there anything as great as the All White's '82 campaign anthem (rhetorical question, okay).
Let's get Ray Woolf back! We all know it, New Zealand's gone to shit since Ray left the scene.
We need Ray with perhaps Suzanne Lynch, Marilyn Waring and Carmen singing back up.
A cover of 'Nothings Going to Stop us Now' by Starship maybe.
    I'd buy that as a 45.

I like The Feelers and have a particular affection for Venus - fond memories of surfing with Supersystem playing loud from the beach as the Sun went low and as I came in a beach party brewing...life's what you make it (Talk Talk).

  • 3410,

in the best hip hop "tradition" someone has responded to dirty sesh....

If only they'd do the same for the RWC theme song.

    Here's my own pathetic attempt:
    (I apologise in advance)

    [mid-tempo]

    1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,
Right Here, Right Now? You fuckin' kidding me, bro?
That shit was 20 thousand miles away and 20 years ago
    How about some fuckin' elegance?
    How about some relevance
    to a culture?
Instead of acting like a vulture.

    Heyyyy!
It's the archetypal kings of bland
Yes, it's the number one band
with they dick in they hand
    Universally panned
    What a tired decision
Honing in on awfulness with surgical precision.

    So,
Hand the choice over to an ad agency
    and ya gonna see
some weak-ass shit on ya TV.
With a song that's been played-out for years
    Played-out for beers
Can't you see the country is sheddin' tears?

At the predictability of it all
So just keep playin' with ya balls
if that's ya area of expertise
Instead of serving up some musical cheese
    get up off ya knees
and pick the fleas out ya ideas!

    Uh!

    Come on!

    and so on!
