  • giovanni tiso,

    is like mana from heaven

I want to know if this is intentional and if so can I please use it?

Following some Ice Hockey forums on and off I'm always amazed at the level of interest about sports equipment, which often escalates into full-scale flame wars. Whole articles these days about Ottawa's netminder's new black and silver mask with the Darth Vader design.

I love ice hockey mask designs. I found a database a while ago and spent ages browsing

    You'll love Darth Gerber then.

  • Richard Irvine,

You've missed the most iconic NZ uniform of them all - the black singlet.

Uniforms have been slowly ruined by sponsors and marketing budgets - if you've got a whole lot of cash to spend with Nike or Adidas for a new shirt, the execs are going to want their moneys' worth, right? That Otago one is a case in point.

English Football suffers terribly in this. take my team (and Leg Break's), Tottenham. Compare this to this.

  • Shep Cheyenne,

I believe the Hockey Girls at the Olympics got in trouble for having the wrong colour undies.
It was with absolute amazement I went down to the netball courts as a lad and saw knicker inspections going on, that was a real WTF moment.

I have had pedants appeal to the ref that they won by default because one of the blokes in my Touch team didn't have the right socks and another didn't have the right shorts. The reply was, do you want to play or should we just go to the bar now? We played - they won.

The side view's not the best though.

I believe the Hockey Girls at the Olympics got in trouble for having the wrong colour undies.

I know they had to wear blue tops instead of white as officials were worried that a rain shower could enable viewers to see their bras.

That's not even the worst - remember this? (I had one of these, ashamedly).

The new ones are truely crap. I went on holiday to the UK a coupla years ago, fully intending to buy a new spurs shirt, but when I actually got my mitts on one, they seemed woeful and low-quality. Didn't bother in the end. I'd like to get a nice retro one, like a 81 or a 91.

  • Hadyn Green,

That first spurs jersey was very cool, though possibly too minimalist.

My current favourite sports wear is my black NY Mets Carlos Delgado t-shirt and my Brett Favre NY Jets replica home jersey.

Like you Richard I went on holiday to the states but couldn't actually get the jersey I wanted. I felt totally ripped off.

Kiwi AFL uniform incorporates "the singlet" with suitable shorts.

Ice hockey is quite unusual in that goalies (not skaters) can paint pretty much what they want on their masks. I can't think of another sport where one player has almost no rules about their appearance, whereas all the other players do.

A few years ago there was a big controversy with skaters playing with tinted/mirrored visors. Some goalies kicked up a fuss that they were disadvantaged because they couldn't see the players eyes, and the tinted and mirrored visors were banned.

Meanwhile the complaining goalie has a helmet painted with death or some lord of the rings or burning flames design.

Agreed, and that's why there's such a retro shirt market in UK football now, they were so much better. Me likes...

American footballers need to have a signed doctor's certificate to say they need a visor (despite how cool they look).

The goalie's mask doesn't cover their eyes though.

The only one I can think off the top of my head is that some baseball catchers have painted masks.

Holy crap - that TOFFS site has an 82 All Whites shirt!

This one is still the bizzo, though.

I really like the away version of that - I did a version of it for one of me indoor football teams...

Firefox blocks sportsfreak.co.nz as an "attack site", BTW.

Personally, I'm not sure if wearing my Reaktor Pyongyang shirt is entirely wise, even on a Friday.

Cruijff was a stunning player and probably the coolest man in football in 73-74, guts me that the Netherlands couldn't win the 1974 WC Final. The Germany episode of the BBC documentary series on World Cup winners includes some great footage of him.
