  • BenWilson,

What if your favourite band or sports team just has shit apparel?

Like every national team in Australia, for instance? It explains why Ozzies have no shame.

  • Joanna,

It can be hard to find a hat that isn't shit. I'm not surprised people wear things that they don't actually endorse.

In part I agree. What if your favourite band or sports team just has shit apparel?

But couldn't you just buy a blank hat then? And make your own fan apparel if you really needed to show team spirit?

  • JackElder,

I support CSC cycling because of Tyler Hamilton in the 2003 Tour de France. And I wear the replica kit because it's one of the few cycling strips that actually looks pretty good.

It was a common criticism of Brit indie bands in the early 90s that many of them sold more t-shirts than records.

In thatHumvee? Dance on your knees? No, not dance.

I made the assumption that the place to dance was on someone else's lap.

Few ever seem to. Personally I wear one. But no one has ever accused me of having style.

  • Gareth Ward,

I wouldn't be surprised if a large number of people liked the clothes first and then the team/band

Totally true. Despite most not knowing where Charlotte was. I was a Suns fan back then

And I only just found that they've been the New Orleans Hornets for the last 8 years! With quite a cool fleur-de-lis (sp?) hornet thingymawhatsit that would look great on a Starter jacket.

They rebranded? Inconceivable! ... Well, no, not really. Just makes me feel a little old.

    Whenever, wherever...

And back to the clothing talk, my biggest omgwtf with athletics merch - since I was at an American school and most of the wearers were actually from the places they wore the stuff of - were the singlets for the '92 Olympics US basketball "Dream Team" because I still thought then that the Olympics was for non-professionals.

And completely shifted cities. Still haven't won a damn thing though.

Cracking party, that Welly beerfest. SJD played a great set, as did the Tuts.

For some reason particles of mud and grass are still on my ski jacket after a run through the washing machine.

Do you have any pictures of the stage area?

  • BenWilson,

It always struck me that the whole point of wearing obscure advertising was to appear to be passionate about something, without anyone being able to hassle you about how shit it was. Which seems a bit shit all in itself.

  • Naly D,

I have long since given up on assuming that anyone wearing the hat or shirt of an American team is, in fact, a fan of said team. It is vaguely annoying.

Yeah, if it were true, half of Wellington would be Celtics, and in particular, Paul Pierce fans, apparently.

To what Hadyn was saying, refer to the guy next to me on the train to Levin on the weekend. Might have been around 16, and was wearing a pretty nice looking Celt's hat. I got talking to him, and popped 'Oh, so you're a Celtics fan?' into the conversation - already had 'I'm a Cav's fan myself, reckon you guys can take it this year' lined up to follow, only he interrupted with a 20 minute story about how his hat blew away in town and it was only $30 for that one.

I put my headphones back on and listened to Smashing Pumpkins the rest of the way to pretend he didn't exist.

Awesome post Hadyn, very thorough round-up [well I feel like it is anyway, but I wasn't there, so don't take me as an expert or anything]. Just lay off the journo's huh! We'll take anything for free, we're slaves for marketing ploys

  • BenWilson,

Sometimes people just wear hats to keep the sun off, or their head warm, or because they are bald. What's written on the hat is about as important as what's written on their socks.

But getting bitter on hats is an old tradition. In Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds (1841) there's a bit about how at one time it was considered a very funny joke to say "My, what a shocking bad hat" to anyone at all, and open season was often declared on the hat. For him to have written at the length he did, I figure he must have had a really shit hat. But the point he makes still stands today, that it's really quite strange how much we care about other people's hats.

  • Tom Beard,

Finally! Something to justify the existince of the Humvee!

Sometimes people just wear hats to keep the sun off, or their head warm, or because they are bald. What's written on the hat is about as important as what's written on their socks.

Then might I suggest the simple expedient of wearing a hat without anything written on it?

It can be hard to find a hat that isn't shit.

I can heartily recommend Lock & Co. For those who happen no to be in the vicinity of St James', they do mail order. For those who prefer to support local business, Hill's has a wide list of stockists.

  • BenWilson,

Sure. Having something written there really is asking for it. Come to think of, I really should blank out the word Billabong on my T-shirt, in case people think I'm really into surfing. Last thing I need is a belligerent drunk demanding I know who the current surfing stars are.

Heh, I liked some of those hats. But such hats make even more of a statement, IMHO, than some weak logo on a cheap hat. They say "I picked out this expensive hat because I really like it". Which, if it's a still a shit hat, is even worse!

I'm rather charmed by Lock & Co.'s pith helmet complete with chin strap. A bargain at £202 including shipping!

  • BenWilson,

Heh, anyone wearing a 'provocative' unknown American sports team baseball cap would be totally upstaged by that. The chin strap is probably essential.
