  • mark taslov,

The thing I find amusing about Bastareaud's original story is that it wasn't just one or two guys who took him out but the whole tight five.

If you bother to embellish, you might as well do it properly.

  • Tom Semmens,

More pompous bullshit from the NZRFU! General manager of professional rugby Neil Sorensen (I was at school with this guy! let's just say streaming wasn't his friend...) said this today:

"...the New Zealand Rugby Union had not asked the security to tell its staff to treat pitch invaders with kid gloves.

"Pitch invasions at major rugby events are taken extremely seriously because of the potential risk to players, officials and spectators," Sorensen said.

"That's why we have security protocols in place to strictly enforce and protect the field of play..."

Spectators? Really? How is a single woman on the pitch a threat to the spectators? How exactly does a brutal tackle on a clearly passive woman do anything except sicken a large part of your audience? How can I interpret your pompous defense of the security guards actions as anything other than one boffhead encouraging ex-judicial thuggery by another boffhead?

Neil, you DO know rugby already has a dubious reputation for fostering violence against women?

Neil Sorenson, you win the cock-of-the-week award from me.

  • Ian Dalziel,

    Marketing by osmosis...?
One wonders if part of the lack of ticket sales for the less than inspiring All BLacks ©®TM / Italy "match" could be a lack of advertising - no posters, no specific ads in the Press that I could see - an ad for brand All BLacks ©®TM in last week's Press that mentioned in 14pt type near the bottom an upcoming Italy game and a website - not exactly an exhortation to arms - and the usual cyber-elitism...*

This was the game the CRFU and NZRFU needed to throw to the masses - cheap seats or even some free ones to create some enthusiasm and good will amongst the fans...

AMI Stadium is viewed by the locals as having everything to do with money and nothing to do with friends
    - time to get real.

*PS: No ad in today's paper either - maybe they blew it all on Telly ads - which I don't watch very often...

  • Jake Pollock,

I'm reminded of a tri-nations cricket series in Aussie in... 2001? NZ stopped trying to get close in a (already lost) game against South Africa so that they could lose by a bonus point (about 50 runs), and deny Aussie the second final spot (against NZ). Wouldn't catch Stephen Fleming not knowing exactly what he wanted to do on the field to achieve the desired result.

Except in that case it was a stupid thing to do, because we had been beating Australia throughout the series and losing to South Africa, and ended up losing the final by a pretty large margin.

  • giovanni tiso,

It was a decision taken mid-game, though. When it became obvious that we weren't going to beat them, we decided to lose by a lot rather than making it a close contest. I'll confess that when they explained the bonus point rule in the first game in that series I *immediately* thought hey, it could end up with a team throwing a game to make the final. That's how the Italian psyche works.

Oh maybe. We might have got our butts kicked by Australia in the final just as much.

But you wouldn't catch Stephen Fleming not being fully informed, apparently that's OK with the All Blacks though.

  • ScottY,

At what point should we begin the mass panic over how dire the All Blacks have been this year?

On their current form, will we win a Tri-Nations game this year?

And will someone tell the Italian team that losing a test by 21 points is not cause for celebration?

Yeah. There's 'rust' and there's "this doesn't look anything like a world-beating team, three weeks out from playing two of the best teams in the world."

And there's 'holy shit we're about to get 6 people back from injury and if they hadn't gotten injured we wouldn't have seen the benefits of Isaac Ross and Tanerau Latimer [and that I was right about Masaga]'.

  • Paul Rowe,

But I think coaches have to be patient. If there are no vacancies, then there are no vacancies. And remember we've chased a few messiahs in the past, including our current one.

Yes I agree, and Deans was probably right to sling his hook rather than wait four more years, given he was entitled to think that an unsuccessful World Cup should have created a vacancy at the top.

(I supported and still support the reappointment of Henry in 2008, and would not fire him now)

Talkback was awful yesterday, with Lawrie Mains, a coach who had his fair share of people trying to get him sacked, suggesting that two years is more than enough time and Henry should get the bullet. I turned it off when people started suggesting Blackadder was the man for the job.

I see your point now that Cooper's next promotion will be to the selection panel, given he's hardly shown the sort of record you'd want in a head coach. Given that with Deans gone, Cooper & Foster are the most successful coaches in the country over the last 2 seasons, they would be front runners for the job if it were vacant now. Watch out for Gatland to ride over the horizon after the 2011 World Cup, like Mitchell did in 2001 (and Henry after him)

Well, yeah. You miss out on a job you want, what do you do? Apply for another one. There's nothing to stop Robbie coming back to NZ in four years, or however long, just cos he's coached Australia. Frankly, I'd rather our coaches went offshore and got experience coaching international football, as and where the opportunities arise. They aren't going to get any better experience anywhere else.

I don't think Blackadder should get the job, but he should be part of a more experienced set-up.

Just because it's not on TV, doesn't mean that they couldn't demonstrate their benefits (or lack of) with the Junior ABs, which is where they'd all have been playing.

That really is half the point of a Junior ABs team.

You'll here no argument from me there, but if we'd left everyone with the juniors, who would you have put in place of Masaga, McAlister, Latimer, Messam, Ross, de Malmanche?

I wasn't saying they shouldn't be there. Someone had to take the field, you pick the best 22 you can.

Just that saying "oh look we saw how good some of these new kids are" wasn't the reason to put them in the All Blacks. We have the junior all blacks for that very purpose.
