Field Theory: I suppose you could call it "passion"

No that can't be right. Canterbury skipped both Wellington and Waikato, both of which are franchise bases.
Oh come on Kyle.
Canterbury rugby are famous for breaking all the rules.

Oh sure. But these days they seem to fall within the rules, they just get Tasman to do everything for them and then grab the players for Crusaders _just_ before they get on the field in a Tasman top.

Auckland goes through 2007 unbeaten, taking out the NPC and Ranfurly Shield.
They lose 16 players from that squad and a good chunk of those who remained were All Blacks who were unavailable for virtually all of the competition.
I challenge any other team in the competition that gets completely gutted because it has so many quality players that get bought up abroad to amount to anything the following season when they field their b team (in reality probably more like their c or d team looking at some of those names.
I was bitching at sportsfreak for days about the bonus point sham (before Auckland missed out I might add).
It's a joke. Where does 4 tries come from? Where does a 7 point loss come from?
They are arbitrary numbers that make no sense. Why not give teams bonus points for winning by more than 7 points? Why not give teams extra bonus points for 8 tries or 12 tries?
Why treat a team the same that has scored 4 tries or 9 tries the same?
Why does team that loses by 8 points 3 weeks in a row get nothing and a team that loses by 4 or 5 points 3 weeks in a row get 3 compeition points?
It's all completely ridiculous with no rhymn or reason. It might make games a little more interesting sometimes but it's just plain not fair.
Never has been and never will be.

Yamis, you've just said everything I've been saying for years now (god, I've got to find a new issue)
It's interesting what you say about excitement levels. The introduction of the bonus point system has not ensured that every game is exciting.

Had a gander at your post (from 3 years ago) and it's good stuff.
It's something that I wax lyrical on quite often and get shot down over at sportsfreak for (going under 'westie stylz' there).
It looks like they are going to 15 teams in 2 years with a team being set up in Melbourne.
Then a couple of years later they will go to 18 teams with the 3 new teams most likely coming from Japan, USA and I would say either Argentina or the PI's.
It is going to be ultra messy from there because they aren't sure about whether to have 3 conferences, playing those teams home and away and each other team in the comp once.
It's also going to provide a dilemna with where to put Argentina. If they don't play in Argentina it will be stupid and if they do then the travel from them and other teams will be getting ridiculous.
Teams can't be expected to perform when they play 2 games in South Africa, then fly to Argentina, then fly to Japan, then back to NZ for a few games, then to Aussie for 2 games...
or a variation of that.
Logistically South Africa and Argentina should join the European comps while the Pacific rim countries play in a Super comp.
It won't happen though because if the SA dollars disappeared they would pump more $$'s into the Euro comps and then they could poach more top players from OZ and NZ.

No, but I'm not sure anyone ever claimed that it would make _every_ game more exciting.
You do sometimes see a team kicking the penalty to touch and going for the try rather than the goalposts because of the bonus point rule. So it has affected decision-making on the field. Probably less so now with the ELVs.
-
Yep, you definately see times where sides go for the try. But is it worth 'corrupting' the whole system over?
League doesn't have bonus points for tries and you are just as likely to see them in the last few minutes as any other minutes during the game.
If they want to make the game a bit more exciting in terms of running rugby then the ELVs have gone a fair bit of the way as you say.
The other obvious way is to simply make tries worth 6 points. That way 2 penalties would not beat an unconverted try as it does now.
If they did that they could scale back a bit. Maybe something weird like 1 point for a drop goal (3 points is ridiculous), 2 points for a penalty, 4 for a try and 1 for a conversion. Where you score your try shouldn't be such a crucial thing. We could take a leaf out of American football for that where it's 6 for a touchdown and the "extra point" is worth just that.

Canterbury lost to Manuwatu
But then they did win every other game. Albeit winning ugly, not getting bonus points and not being as good as Wellington who deservedly finished higher on the table.
Two points about the Manawatu Canterbury match:
It was close (as was Colin Slade's final kick - the Hadlee stand thought it went over, as did Colin Slade).
And Auckland may have lost 16 players, but the team for Manawatu was, more or less, Canterbury B - average age about 22, off the top of my head they were missing McDonald, Maitland, Laulala, Mauger, Carter, Brett, Ellis, Leo'o, Thorne, McCaw, Ross, Michael Paterson, Corey Flynn and Greg Somerville due to exits or injury.
It was a fun game though, and nice to see Manawatu win - disappointing they didn't kick on. The crowd was pretty cheeful (Canterbury had at least 4 Manawatu players itself).
Btw - the reason that the "within 7" is a bonus point is that you get 7 points for a converted try.

Ahem: peak oil. Just to put it out there. Someone also mumbled something about the global economy recently.

That was my point too. Auckland lost to Counties, but then came back to win five games. One more game than three teams above them. Just seems wrong y'know.

Yeah it would have to be a consideration.

How come I have to log in on this site constantly even after selecting the "remember me" button? I've tried the cookie, security things and made no difference.
Just throwing that out there.
The global economy shouldn't affect a couple of expansion teams in the US and Japan. It's not like they are trying to keep 6 teams afloat each. It would be their national teams and they have a damn site more money at their disposal than we do. New York Yankees pay roll for one season would keep ALL of NZ rugby going for about 10 years.
Also 18 teams might not be in until 2012 at the earliest so the economy may be picking up about then and we'll be onto soup with vegetables in it as opposed to boiled water.

Whew, I thought that was just me.

Didn't pro-football come out of the depression in the States? And (he says preparing to draw a long bow) didn't the games at the Colosseum start as some kind of thing to distract the public from something.
(clearly I need to go read some history books) -

So your suggestion is, instead of bonus points, we throw some Christians into the middle of the game? (against the Lions?)

As long as it didn't count towards competition points, I'm all for it.
