  • Rich of Observationz,

Or alternatively the hard way, which involves running a cable either from the TAPE-2 output on the back of your amp, or straight from the headphone jack on the front, to the LINE-IN port on your computer, running something like AudioGrabber to record the LINE-IN sound to a wav file, using something like WavePad or PolderbitS to clean the sound up and slice it in to songs, then converting the wav files to mp3. This is my latest project, which I have been pursuing now for a few months.

I have about 40 sides done.

I use Audacity. Typically I record the file using maximum bits and sample rate, chop silence from the beginnings and ends and run "Normalise" to set the levels correctly. I'm using a Technics SL-1200, a Pioneer DJM-600 mixer and a Hercules DJ-Console soundcard. I have the trim control marked with a position that keeps the level out of clipping and all tone controls at 0db.

I don't use any kind of filter/effect apart from that, but most of my music is on 12" singles, which are much higher quality than 80's albums (I'm talking pressings here, not musical talent...).

  • Peter Darlington,

I don't mind creating a PAS group on Last.fm if there are enough people interested in jumping on, it's not like it's very onerous if you are already a last.fm user. The only stipulation is that more than 3 people have to be interested to make it viable (less than three means the group is deleted), and it would be only polite to have Russell's agreement as the PAS Hoochie Mama.

I've looked at Audacity before, and a program called Magix Audio Cleaning which is pretty good (but costs actual money, which I may have to pay one day...) - it handles the sound capture as well as a range of infinitely-tweakable fixy-uppy bits and pieces (which I haven't used either, apart from the hum-removal). How much of a problem is hum in your setup?

A lot of my vinyl has seen better days so needs some serious cleaning. Especially so for the shitty late-80s "how thin can we make a piece of vinyl before it snaps under the weight of the stylus and anyway everyone's buying CDs so who cares" pressings.

  • Paul Rowe,

Re: vinyl - MP3, like everyone else, I consider my collection chocka of unique and beautiful snowflakes. I was thinking about getting one of these, and flogging it back on TradeMe once I was done.

The Grauniad advertises something similar for around a hundred quid. I don't know if the $700 bucks that guy wants is a lot, but it seems like it. If I spot it I'll link to it.

  • Dave Patrick,

Searching for the same unit as that guy's offering, I can find it for 250 Australian, and around 70 pounds. $700 is ridiculous, even the starting point of 350 gives the guy a reasonable return.

A sign of a cool blog. Why one that carries ads for 'Little Honey' of course :)

  • Jackie Clark,

I thought that you were confusing the Kings of Leon with Kings of Convenience.

Yummy. I sometimes think I'm the only person ever to love the KOC in this country. No-one I know has ever heard of them. It's a crime. Everyone should have their splendid sounds in their lives.

Thanks Jackie, I'm generally a big fan of the Pork Recordings whanau including Fila Brasilia, Solid Doctor and trippy breakbeat house in general.

    Osbourne Ruddock, nice.

Heh, I gotta get more of the Tubbster into iTunes though, all mine is on CD.

And I'm afraid to admit I only know of them because of Erland Oye (please excuse lack of Nordic slashes and diacriticals), and I only know him because of his two tracks with Royksopp (ditto).

  • jon_knox,

Just fired up Genius on SJD's Down a hole. Of 25 songs, Faith No More's Evidence (yeah!), Jose Gonzalez covering Teardrop and a track each from PJ Harvey & Beirut are the only non-NZ selections. I'm fairly sure that this is not representative of my collection. It looks like Genius has swallowed whatever last.fm had.

  • tussock,

I'd post my last.fm link, but it would just confirm how much I secretly enjoy bland popular music and classic hits, regardless of my longing for an independent voice.

  • Danielle,

really disturbed at just how much Harry Nilsson I actually listen to

Oh-so-belatedly because I was in Melbourne (seeing Supergrass, as it happens) one should never be disturbed by listening to lots of Harry Nilsson. He is fucking great.

Say what you mean, Danielle :)

But agreed. I think I'm the only person on the planet that loves Pussycats (the album that is...)

  • Simon Grigg,

So i joined myself up to Peter's Last.Fm group..I've never really looked at the site before..not given it much more than passing glance (but when I went to register found I'd done so at some long past date, using my mother's nickname for me bizarrely) and it's rather cool, no?

One point of extreme frustration is it's tendency to assign the artist to whichever artist has the same name in it's database first..hence The Features track was attributed to the dodgy US group of the same name. So I fixed that..... ;)

  • Peter Darlington,

Doh! I just asked you who you were at last.fm! Duly ignore...

Might pay to plug the group on one or two future Field Theory or Hard News Friday music wrap ups as I'm sure there are quite a few more musicly inclined folks who may not have followed this thread through. The more the merrier for keeping an eye on what people are listening to.
