  • Mike Graham,

And did it seem strange to see the players wearing sponsorship on their chests from a sports-betting agency? Talk about a conflict of interest.

Also as bad as Ricky Ponting discussing Andrew Symonds bad drinking habits while wearing a VB cap.

Women's tennis? Were any New Zealanders involved? Sharapova? Kournikova? A Williams sister? Anyone deemed by the powers that be to be attractive? No? Give it 10 seconds then.

It's traditional (not the sports betting). Cotton Traders belongs to some former rugby players.

That would be the same TV1 bulletin that led with the massively underwhelming SBW non-story.

And the same bulletin that had nothing on the fact that Australia had qualified for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, or any of the other qualification news.

  • noizyboy,

Despite being harassed on court by some idiot with a flag, (note how slow the security is in reacting).

    That was f**kin appalling.

You'd think that after the Seles incident, no-one should be able to get close to players in a professional tournament, let alone in the final of a Grand Slam.

French authorities can just be thankful the guy was (presumably) a crazy fan supporting Federer, as opposed to the (very scary) opposite.

Aye. I presume they no longer allow fans in with sharp knives (as much as possible), but that still wouldn't stop the fan jumping him and pummelling him.

You would have thought the security should be crouched around the court facing the crowd so they can see that stuff coming, rather than noticing it's going on once the crowd jeering encourages them to look up from whatever they were doing.

  • Simon Poole,

The Barbarians also have another quirk, if you play for them you need to bring your own socks.

I thought it was common knowledgel that the Barbarians are picked from the players wear their club socks?

In your photo you can see that Greg Somerville is wearing the Gloucester socks, Ben Blair is in his Cardiff Blues, although I can't pick Jerry's. An old Norths pair?

Yeah pretty poor all round. "SBW was awesome! We don't have any footage or stats to back it up, but trust us, he totally was!"

Not Toulon. Not Ospreys. Looks too light for Norths. Not even Barnstaple

When did Jerry ever play for a club in Wellington that wasn't Norths?! It seems a bit sacreligious for the man who'd show up for Norths the day after playing for Wellington. But the socks do confuse me.

  • Angus Robertson,

TVNZ need to be chastised in their reporting of the women's final (an upset victory to Svetlana Kuznetsova over world number one, Dinara Safina). They showed us one point being scored (not even a long rally) and the winner's speech.

Kuznetsova is such a nice person she did a really lovely speech so they had to show that. And it was a highlight of the match.

Safina choked and Kuznetsova didn't. If they wanted to tell the story of the game in a moment the double fault to lose match point would have been the replay of choice, anythingelse is a mercy.

  • George Darroch,

Does anyone know what the point of the Barbarians is? I saw individual talent, and some standout moments from them, but as a team they appeared to me as I would expect; incoherent, and without a overriding style or strategy. Less than the sum of their parts.

Compare that to NZ Maori, for example, and the difference is stark.

  • Edward Siddle,

back in the day, the barbarians games were often played as a final match of a tour by a team like the All Blacks. they were pretty serious affairs, and often were like another test match, with the teams selected often being virtually a Lions side. the 73 game where they beat the all blacks playing running rugby (in contrast to our dour style) is still talked about over there (i know, i have a mate who references it at least once a year). what the point is now, i'm less sure.

jerry certainly wasn't wearing this year's st pat's town socks anyhow...perhaps they've changed over the years or they really are some other socks.

Yes. those jerseys were odd. Sort of like they had borrowed their big brother's footy jersey. Beterr, though, than the Wallabies jersey which makes Stirling Mortlock look like some kind of predatory lizard.
