For me the problem was as a player on the field I would be understandably distracted if my other half was sitting on the lap of the guy paying me money to dance for his amusement. Stanford should've been blown up, but it should mainly have come from the players and then the media.
In many sports, the players would have stopped playing, grabbed their bat, and marched up into the stands to teach him a lesson.

Just the whole competition seemed a bit, i dunno, unseemly to me. Yes, we're living in an age of exorbitant, obscene wages being paid to professional sportsmen, but there was still something grubby about the way these teams were clamouring after the 20 mill.
Reminds me of 'Indecent Proposal.'

If I knew how to embed vids I would. There is no outward sign of coercion whatsoever.
I think you just paste the youtube url

I quite agree. That would also be the situation in many bars and nightclubs.

"How much for one weekend with your cricket team?"

Don't see any indigenous Brazilians or Colombians fanging around, do you?
Juan Pablo Montoya, currently tearing up the track in NASCAR but ex-Willams. Previously Roberto Guerrero. There have been 28 Brazilian F1 drivers. Also several Mexicans, a Chilean, an Indian, a Malaysian, the list goes on.

Sorry, can't agree here, Haydn. My point (however badly made) is that this contretemps had no bearing on anything to do with the game and it is only the media's (and by reflection, our) salacious interest in what rich/pretty folk get up to that caused it to get any airtime.
It's just people being people. It had nothing to do with the Poms getting thumped by a made up team of "Stars". (I suppose conspiracy theorists would probably say that Stanford was trying to distract the Poms so his team would win)
Are the press suggesting that Stanford financed the whole shindig just to get a chance to romp with a few WAGs?
There just doesn't seem to be any point to any of this angle. -

OK Julian, point made. But you can't dispute the fact that it is a predominantly white man's sport (and when i referred to indigenous Brazilians and Colombians, I meant those of non-European heritage), and that getting started on the road to an F1 career requires a substantial amount of financial backing.
The point I am making about Hamilton is that he has been able to triumph in a highly exclusive sport, despite being from a) a middle class background and b) black. So good on him.

I think F1 hit its peak shortly after Senna/Villeneuve left.
I think the expression you are looking for is "were killed."

I think we're saying the same thing. I was trying to say that the players had to make the first move on it.
If they were pissed off that Stanford was "macking" on their lady-friends then they should've said so, and then there would've been a story for the media: "Players tell Stanford to keep his eyes on the pitch" (or something). If not then the whole thing is a media beat-up, as you say.

All the pop-ups? What's going on in that video?

Other than the fact that the players didn't do that, it really is a News Shocker: Attractive women flirt with rich men, headline.
I wonder who the players were more annoyed with: Stanford, or the boyfriends/husbands of the flirting WAGs.

They didn't die, they just went home.

But cricket is a gentleman's game...

Hadyn, can I ask what it is/was about Herr Schumacher that excites you more than Hamilton?
He was the greatest driver of all time (in my opinion) and cool clinical - to the point of robotism - attitude. My favourite moment was in his final year when he had just beaten Alonso and was (maybe) a point or two behind him in the overall standings. At the press conference Schumacher said with the tiniest of smiles: "Looks like it will be an interesting season". It was like cheering for the bad guy who always wins.
Schumi was a great driver but he initiated the era of the dull. I preferred the Prost-Senna rivalry myself with Prost refusing to roll over to the new kid on the block.
But the G.O.A.T for me has got to be Villeneuve. He didn't win much but he always drove Ferrari and he went out big style in the greatest of all seasons, the crazy arsed 1982 ground-effect season where the cars were the world's fastest dodgem bombs. F1 has never been faster, crazier and more dangerous and it's still probably the closest sport has come to Cronenberg's 'Videodrome". There had to be death and it had to be crazy explosive death. Compulsive viewing.

Re: Athletes of the Week.
Can I put in a plug for Hull City in the EPL? They were expected to be crash test dummies for the glamour clubs but they're refusing to roll over and are kicking some big boy arse. They didn't beat the Manscum this weekend but they gave them a decent run for their money and at this rate we might even see the odd Hull City jersey appearing on the streets of NZ to offset all the Manc and Chelsea ones that the glory boys wear.

Well yes,
Except there have been a few weeks over the last couple of months which would make more sense to give them that award.
