  • Hadyn Green,

Feel free to use this thread to discuss all of your All Whites hopes, dreams, aspirations and despairs

  • Just thinking,

Yes, the All Whites, needs too much context and awareness of the juxtaposition of the All Blacks to make sense and even then...

But yay - not quite the kid I was in 1982 - but yay!

8hrs to drink and think and still try and see the game - its gonna be close.

  • LegBreak,

Shit stirrer Hadyn. Not planning on an Xmas card from Iain O'B this year?

As for the Bahrani fans; apparently a bit of a todo at Farmers (yes, Farmers) on Thursday night. Club card only night.

No matter how much cash they waved around, the staff just weren't going to serve them.

As for the game itself; very hard to call because we don't play together enough, and we know next to nothing about Bahrain.

One thing for sure though; expect a bit of whining coming our way from the Northern Hemisphere

  • George Darroch,

    Lambs to the slaughter.

I'm not going to count New Zealand out of winning this. By virtue of its low scores, football is a game where statistically the weaker team is more likely to produce an upset than most others, and the best side does not always win - a significant reason for its popularity.

Saudi Arabia were very unlucky not to progress. They've been strong in the last few years, and got a bad draw. Nevertheless, they are out of the competition. If New Zealand does scrape a win against Bahrain, they'll go to the mens world cup and be knocked out almost immediately. There isn't a single team that has qualified that I think New Zealand could beat, even on a very good day.

The Oceania Football Confederation is almost meaningless, and means that New Zealand and the rest of the Pacific have no experience playing strong teams. You need to play teams stronger than you to improve, no matter how bad you are - winning against terrible teams teaches you nothing. The sooner it is abolished the better. That will have to wait until Asia gets strong enough for rearranging confederations, which might be a while.

Oh, I don't know. The USA has an almost guaranteed path to qualification every four years in a very poor group and yet a couple of cups ago they went pretty deep into the competition. Think also of the boon that qualifying to a cup is for a nation these days, in terms of the money that can be injected into player development.

Plus it's no like rugby: the players in national sides play the vast majority of their football with their clubs, not against other nations, that's what hardens them and tests their skill individually.

  • Russell Clarke,

Anyways, can we talk about VFX again? Much more interesting than sport.

  • Hilary Stace,

Are any others a little concerned about a team called the All Whites going to South Africa? Perhaps they could use a te reo version.

  • Russell Clarke,

How would a te reo version be any better?

  • Hadyn Green,

On Twitter #allwhites is the #1 trending topic. This is causing a lot of awakening Americans to ask WTF is going on

  • George Darroch,

Paul, I think so. I missed the game proper, just saw the highlights.

I was in Melbourne when Australia qualified for the first time, against Uruguay in 2005 (penalty shootout!) and the city just went electric. It's funny how that happens - I've never seen that with rugby yet.

  • Matt Swinson,

This is the most unabashedly happy I've been this year... it's like being a 10 year old again! My favourite player is Rory Fallon, and I want to put his poster on my wall. I'm even thinking about sleeping with my shin guards on.

  • 3410,

Gotta give props too to 'keeper Mark Paston for saving a penalty (admittedly, a weak one) and at least one other fairly solid shot on goal.

  • johnno,

    One shot for Rory!!

He's mad, he's bad, he's better than his dad, Rory Fallon!!

We sang our way all the way out the stadium, and down the concourse. The eleven year-old suggested we hit Courtney Place!

Well, we've never had to qualify for the Rugby World Cup...

Well, I don't give a shit about soccer, but I have to say, I have a tear in my eye. What a fantastic thing for those players to be able to say they went to the World Cup.

  • LegBreak,

I love the way that Herbert dropped the F-Bomb straight after the match. We don't get enough of that.

Great stuff. More than great sport, but great theatre.

Who cares we only played 3 matches at home, and the fact that a lot of better sides didn't make it.

That's the rules, and it just balances out the fact that our geographical isolation puts us at a massive disadvantage.

And, unlike 1982, we can really call this team ours.

All Whites might be vaguely survivable, fans with placards reading 'White Power!'? Yes, very amusing and transgressive. Dick.

  • giovanni tiso,

Forget Fallon (by the way, Rory, I'd thank L. Bertos before J. Christ), how good was Killen?!

The haka at San Siro, boy, that sent goosebumps.

  • Steve Parks,

Paston would be my pick for man of the match, but Killen was close (heh).

I feel sorry for Bahrain, but boy we did earn that win - better team on the day as the cliche goes.

Totally. On both counts. I wondered what Kevin made of the Jesus bit.

And Nelsen too. Not just as a player, but all that organising of the back 3.

Our friend Tommy Smythe, at HT in the IRe - Fra match, has just commented on what a great samve Mark Preston madel.

Looking forward to a rematch with you guys in 7 months GT.

  • Steve Barnes,

Bahrainz, someone has eaten my Bahrainz. Why didn't anybody tell me that drinking liberal amounts of various single malts causes ones Bahrainz to atrophy. After a few cups of coffee I may be all white.
