The Nīkau berry. Apparently edible when green, but it was also used as bird shot by early colonialists on account of its hardness.

I was pleased to see this Llew Summers lady in the Gardens. And that the nearby muehlenbeckia seemed to be echoing it.

It’s been a wonderful year for seed.

These three photos are taken on my first smartphone that I can work ie not Android. I'm rapt with the ease of tossing a phone in my pocket and taking some satisfying pictures, as much as I love the DSLR, it's unwieldy.

    Llew Summers lady

Looks like my daughter on her way to school this morning. She had so much fun racing her scooter down the hill yesterday with the northerly pushing her along at a crazy speed, but this morning’s southerly, not so much. “It’s not fun!” “It’s not fast!” “My legs are tired!” “It’s cold!” And yes, I did say something like, “All those winters in Beijing and now you complain about the cold here in Wellington?!”

A couple of stubborn last holdouts of the season…

    Sentinels, and…

…I sometimes wonder how any of our local river life survives, given how the locals treat the banks and streams. And there are signs along here about the restoration project.

Sentinels: I like this. Pylons speak of home.

    Also home: the Port Hills.

    And up Waipara way.

Llew's ladies have become quite amazing for me since the quakes: they are so solid and firm in their being-ness on the land.

Lunch breaks on challenging days are best spent photographing flora and fauna. These from Wintergarden yesterday.

It can be. I’m learning how not to wobble. (No stabilisation on SE.) Also quite a few other things like no viewfinder.

Just beside the entrance to the Auckland Botanic Gardens is this amazing Tibouchina, a Brazilian tree that my photos don’t do justice to. The blaze of colour is jaw-dropping.
