Where did Ruby come from and what is her story?

And consequently, there was much time for contemplation.
Ah yes, aren't those the luxury times we begin to cherish as the best. Ruby reminds me of the bit of freedom dogs can still possess. Bet she already steals hearts.:)
As my break draws to an end, I am in the process of documenting trees. Here is a shot of the wee cones/seeds of the many Kahikatea that adorn the bush which the birds love. The trees are abundant at the moment. -

the flipping birds...
which the birds love
I've noticed this weekend that lots of the little birds have come down to the plains, from their usual sub-alpine areas, looking for food - time to get the bird feeding bags up in the trees...

If we don't placate the little ones with offerings the keas will descend like a pestilence, wreaking havoc on rubber windscreen gaskets. Zombies & brains, keas & kidney fat.

we must preserve our ‘kea-free’ existence here
in our polyunsaturated swamp city… -
Re. feeding the tweeties - if you're of the vego persuasion, coconut-based shortening such as Kremelta is a good substitute for lard when making those birdie feeder cakes.

Hi Gudrun. It's a bit of a long story, really. (Mine always are, I'm afraid.) Last year, our beloved Cleo (staffy/blue heeler x) , died after being ill for some time. We were both beside ourselves with grief, just devastated, and agreed that we would get a puppy, but not for at least 6 months. Well, about a week after Cleo died, Ian told me he was very lonely (he's at home all day, everyday) and he was just going to look online. Another week goes past of us looking at every dog adoption website, and then I saw her photo on www.petsonthenet.co.nz - they are a portal for SPCAs, and other rescue organisations, who put their dogs/cats from all around NZ up for adoption there. Ian saw her, told me she was the one, and I rang the Hamilton Pound the next day to find out a bit more about her. They told us she was just lovely (what 5 mth old puppy isn't) and they also told us a bit about her history (some more of which I learned late last year when Ruby and I went down to see them and catch up). Anyway, we went down a week or so later, and that's how, only a month after our old girl dying, we came to have a puppy running around.
Basically, Animal Control found her wandering the streets of Hamilton when she was about 3 mths old and she was adopted almost straight away by a family who had goats and chickens. She lasted about 2 mths with them, but whatever mixed breeds she has going on, she's definitely got pointer or something hunter-y, so I guess she tried to play with the chickens, and that wasn't so good. After she returned from there, she was quickly snapped up by a couple, who had her for about 2 nights, and brought her back asking if they could swap her. Um, no. Unfortunately, in Hamilton, the SPCA is right next door to the Animal Control so they went and got a pup from there. It's fairly obvious to me that they abused her in some way. All the staff at the Pound noticed that when she came back to them the 2nd time, she was much quieter - after only that couple of days. And when we first got her home, she was almost eerily well behaved for a 6 mth old pup. And she cringed when I said her "Ruby, no" very gently after she pooed inside. So yeah, they'd definitely made a lasting impact on her, shall we say. Here we are 10 mths later, and she is the love of both our lives (not including each other). As you can tell, I will rave about her to anyone who will stand still for one minute. Oops. But really, how can you not love this face? -
Gudrun Gisela, in reply to
Well at last she has found true love and with training i am sure she will be well behaved . Anyway a very sweet story with a happy ending.
