I’ve always hated that War Memorial!
Whatever, a bit of water would improve it out of sight.

I have a negative somewhere in the building and will ferret it out. I loved the wee tiles schoolchildren made that were part of the water feature where that steel structure is.

Joe Wylie, in reply to
The now-vanished 'water feature' badly needed those tiles to relieve the bleak expanses of stainless steel. While those who'd never experienced a pub urinal might miss the connotation, the early critic who dubbed it "a busload of bowlers back from the Coast" wasn't far off.

I liked the Stewart fountain too before it was buggered by the modernisers
+1
The kids’ tiles were a nice idea, but the overall design and layout was nasty. History here. The old design was undemanding and restful, I thought.
Fountains are great, if they’re done right. I used to feel sorry for the one on Riccarton Rd, which typically either wasn’t working or had been turned bubbly by waggish students.

i have become very attached to the Canterbury Plains and feel a strong connection to this place.
There will be pretty places once again to meet family and friends in the not too distant future.I sure hope so! I have yet to mentally assimilate all the losses and changes in the city; when I think of the CBD, it's the intact version I see in my mind. I know intellectually it isn't there anymore, but the fragile afterimage persists.

Loving the exchanges happening here. Feels like another level of Christchurch remembrance.
Cheers everyone.

Could we do a fountains/water Capture thread?

I liked the original stainless steel Stewart because it was so seventies' silly; and people used to put bubbles in the works so it all overflowed in an anarchic way. I loathed the 90s pyramid, though the tiles by young people was a great idea that could have been used more effectively elsewhere.

That fountain in Australia.
The wonderful Archibald.
Great pic Jackson. BTW that's the one figure from the fountain's Greek mythological cast of characters that no-one's clear on who he's supposed to be. -

Well the pic must have been done in the 1980s because the Forsyth Barr building isn't there. So, taking that into account, we can forgive you the trousers, and thanks for the pic. (Clothing crimes -- another Capture thread?) Did you get wet standing there?

Hebe, in reply to
That's the fountain. Your pic makes it look nicer than it generally does during the day.

They were yellow. I recall I made the sweat shirt too. Still, never wore shoulder pads, thank Christ.:)

Quite a few PA readers would not have worn shoulder pads in the 80s. Count me as a not.

at least the Fountain outlasted The Bulletin
I remember many a ‘70s night tottering across from the Ramada to sit and gaze at The Bowker Fountain’s late night light show, before boarding a passing omnibus for deepest St Albans…
There also used to be a band rotunda in Victoria Square
and I see in the paper today that the Edmonds’ Band Rotunda is to be demolished… I remember organising out door gigs there epochs ago – also coming down is the Armson woolstore (Durham st by the overbridge) which I worked in as a yoof, latterly it has been a design store and is right next to the main access to the Rialto Cinema……the pic must have been done in the 1980s because the Forsyth Barr building isn’t there.
to be pedantic The Forsyth Barr wouldn’t have been there then either, even if it was, it would have been the R Jones Investments building (Bob’s Block) back then…
…best be off bricks to clean and stack…
hi ho hi ho…PS I note an excellent letter from ex-city manager, John Gray, in today’s Press – bring him back!

O I did! I have broad shoulders, but they were ever so much broader with 80s shoulder-prostheses!!

Hehe I was thinking that, too. ;-)
