  • JacksonP,

Righto. There’s been a few Flying Nun tributes and ruminations going on over this month, and hasn’t it been great? I’m off to see Fetus Productions tonight. Amazing.

We’ve been so thrilled with the response to Capture so far, that on the way home last night I stopped in at Musiquarium on Dominion Road and grabbed a couple of CDs to give away.

Knowing Russell is also doing this, I figure there are probably more than three people out there who would like the Flying Nun Tally Ho compilation, so we’ll be giving away two more.

    These will go to;

    1) The best photo contribution in the first week of Capture.
    2) The best photo or story on this Flying Nun post by Jonathan.

Judges’ decisions will be arbitrary, bribes will be taken, and the winners will be announced next Tuesday on our one week anniversary.

    Capture away.

PS. Support your local independent Music Store. If you want to.

Incredible stuff from Jonathan - what a great post.

And why don't I try out this uploading lark whilst making reference to something he said recently about the mic stand being the photographer's worst enemy?

Here's David Kilgour of The Clean at Brighton Freebutt on May 12 last year.

We knew we had arrived at the right house because one of the Androidss was outside smoking a joint.

Or p'raps this one, of Andrew Wilson of sometime-Nun'ers Die! Die Die!, playing at London's now defunct Metro club on April 27th, 2006.

Still one of the best live bands in the world, and great fun to shoot.

Interesting that MGMT have included The Chills on their LateNightTales compilation (HMV) in An inspirational after hours mix featuring new and rare inspirational gems hand picked by MGMT (from The Word December 2011)

I am resigned to gig envy, but memories are good too. Thanks Jonathan for stimulating some of those (and I may even recall one or two being taken).

Headless Chickens, publicity shot around the time of their first album. It's in Queen Street -- you can see the Civic building behind them. Photographer unknown.

In the band room with The Chills, somewhere in the Netherlands, 1987. Taken on timer by Simon Alexander.

Back row: Andrew Frengley, Lisa Coleman, Simon Alexander, Justin Harwood.

Centre row: Martin Phillipps, Kate Tattersfield, Craig Taylor, Caroline Easter.

And that’ll be me front and centre.

Not sure we can in all good conscience give you a CD, but you're making it difficult for us. Just so you know.

A fat gut in a studded belt

I believe the word there isn't "gut" but something stronger.

Still, you've probably saved WebMarshal filters the length of the country from blowing up by not using that particular word in the first line of the post.

Not only that, but I wanted to send the link to my Mum! Anyway, I transcribed from the lyrics on the sleeve of ‘Cut It Out’. It’s funny though, from my Auckland-centric point of view I had thought that ‘Needles & Plastic was about the Doublehappys visiting Zanzibar in Fort St. However Shayne’s excellent article in the recent Sunday magazine made it clear it was about a Christchurch club, which I think was also called Zanzibar.

Great photo. The name of the winners of the first Rheineck Rock Award was the worst kept secret in town. Are you the keeper of the Planet archives, Russell?

That photo of the Able Tasmans is so so beautiful

Thanks Robyn. An almost identical shot was published in BiFiM where the band were all looking at the camera but the negative is lost.

Great photos of Fetus Productions, Brian. Serum’s hat was quite distinctive.

You will be doing a book some day won't you?

Thanks Ian, I hope to. Feeling very encouraged now. I was looking at an online book published by Blurb recently and thinking what great quality it was.

the mic stand being the photographer's worst enemy

    Damn microphones!

It is possible to get a great shot of someone singing, but often it looks weird, or the microphone is poking out the eye or slicing the face in half.

    Ah. Interesting.

I was going on Shayne's comments when he hauled it out at the King's Arms. I recall he speculated that it was surely the only rock song with "cunt" in the first line.

Great, so not only do we have to tell our mums how to vote (HT Gio T), now we also have to tell them not to read the comments on our blog. It's a hard road being the perfec' son.

This photo has done the rounds a bit, but I kind of like it. Being the nerd that I am, I asked if they minded. Jon said 'Until you asked, no.' I took it anyway.

The Sex Pistols' Silly Thing was originally Silly Cunt but they wanted it played on radio. Changing the noun when singing along makes the tune sound so much righter.
