Those few days ago, there were maximal numbers of yellow leaves on the tree but few had fallen.

And under the tree itself, as weak sun broke through low cloud to disperse the fog. Just upstream, the weeping willow too has its foliage maximally yellow, more concentratedly so.

    More Instagraming.

With temperatures like today (17 C at least in Auckland) can’t see why we have to let Autumn go just yet.

We had 20C a day or two ago, highest ever recorded June temp in Whakatane.
Love the blue one Jac, and the tree and jet!

Here's a whooshy one from this morning
and a fine balance of spoonbills

Not sure what that's all about, but we'll still be here for the next round.

    Take care.

Nice carpets, and swirlies and the bird balancer, and pleased to see the walnut tree keeps on keeping on by the riverside.

I tried to photograph this rather delicious cat today, he just moved too much – however, like the way the red carpet makes him float…..

Well I wasn’t going to, but since you had a floating cat, I was trying out a new iPhone app today called ‘Levitagram’, made by a kiwi developer. This was a rough edit I admit, but remembering it was done on the phone.

It sure put the wind up old Queen Vic.

    Night all.

Her heavy drapery more than a match for your wind - she looks unflappable. Though to say 'completely unmoved' would be an overstatement, I admit.

Sun and shadow on autumnal walnut leaves and leaflets.

That is so silly and funny: it reminds me of the old coot in Dad's Army and his "they don't like cold steel up them". All kinds of objects I could put on a pole (rather than a pike). A good laugh on a day when one is sorely needed: thanks.

Pupdate: Nina today: eight and a half days old and a bellyful of milk. Those paws with their micro-claws are 5mm across. She has a suck like a Dyson and a ferocious will to live. Winston will come later: he's not wanting prime-time yet.
Drat: should have been in Dogs thread -- perhaps it will help uplift discourse here.

Hi Kebabette, I have been meaning to congratulate you on your fabulously lit photos of the building facade which you posted earlier in this thread. I think it may be the same building as this one – my much less dramatic image – which is just around the corner from Alice’s… Sad state of affairs but I loved the stripped-bare nature of the construction and support work.

Autumn orange signage? Okay, only kidding! However, it was taken in Autumn - last year.

And now, making an effort to get a bit more on track, here is another Autumn image. It's a rare eucalyptus which grows near our place, the name of which I cannot recall just now. It flowers on an Olympian scale - gets absolutely covered with them.

Indeed it is - candy pink!

You are down south yes? A frost-free spot? I have increasingly been wondering what growing conditions are like around the coast north of Dunedin; there are some fine-looking north-facing sheltered places. I like gardening and Chch is getting tiresome in many ways...or maybe it's third-year syndrome.

  • Leigh Russell, in reply to Hebe,

Hi Hebe, yes, I live near Dunedin. Frost free? er, no! Beautiful certainly, and in relation to gardening it's just a matter of adjusting a little, largely in relation to the shorter hot spells of summer, so the vege growing season is different. For example, forget tomatoes unless you have a glass house - they just don't have long enough to ripen properly..

  • Hebe, in reply to Leigh Russell,

No tomatoes! That's almost a dealbreaker. We are still picking from a couple of outside plants (we cover them at night).
