  • Southerly: My Life As a Palm Tree, in reply to David Haywood,

Hi David. Great to see you've picked up your pen and are wielding it with all the old power and panache - and some! The Norway on my nerves piece was classic magic-from-mayhem Haywood; I felt like I was there, only without all the baggage.

And all credit to you for chucking that barbed beast of bitterness off your back; sure, you're a better man than me.

As to preschoolers-unleashed stories, you did ask...

Oldest, on his first school visit, asked to join in the exercise of drawing a picture and writing a sentence to explain it, drew - pretty accurately - three sperm and five beads and wrote: "Here are three sperm (spelt 'spurm') and five beads." The New Entrant teacher provided one, cautious, clipped tick.

Middle child (this week running for National Affairs officer for AUSA, incidentally), in front of other mums and under fives, in response to one of them suggesting that she might grow up one day to marry her best friend, offered a worried look in my direction before casting doubt on the idea for the reason that the boy's penis was far too small.

And our youngest, preparing for a promising Playcentre trip to the local apple orchard, piled into a van with a number of other youngsters, sat next to a friend of his who was being issued with last-minute cautions by his mother, in his mother tongue that was not English, took it upon himself to tell the woman, ever so politely, to fuck off. I was not attending this trip, so had to hear about it later from the outraged mother. When I grilled said son about his reasons, after some thought, he said : "Ugly language" and he wasn't referring to his own. So much for the benefits of multicultural immersion.

  • Hard News: A plea for sanity on the…,

Hello PA people. Please excuse the rude gatecrash but... I used to write on PAS under 'Speaker' (Sally Jones). Time flies; it's a few years back now (about three), so maybe nobody remembers, but let's say one or two of you do remember - the blow-job writer, my first essay here was on 'My first job' - then please feel free to check out my new blog - One Woman's World (OWW)
http://onewomanswo.blogspot.co.nz/ and leave a comment. Better still, 'follow'. I will do the same in return.
It's especially for the poets. Just finished a poem on the side effects of sex. Poets and feminists, feminist poets, are particularly welcome.

    Sacha.

  • Up Front: It's Complicated,

"Some people have a much easier time thinking of a theoretical eighteen year old boy as a manipulative abusive predator than they do a girl. That's problematic too..."

Sorry I haven't read the article in full. This from Emma I read. This Emma I agree with and find problematic. Gender-stereotyped thinking is rampant. It's defensive and simplistic, speaking out its own ass. Personally I consider myself to be (sorry if totally off thread) multi-gendered, even as I am a mere heterosexual.

Meanwhile, I used to write on PAS under 'Speaker'. • Up Front: Card on the Table,

For the record, I think Cleese's joke is funny, but perhaps not yet.

  • Up Front: Card on the Table,

Yes to all of that (small comment notwithstanding). In the same genre the latest Listener's Sport's segment, also on Pistorius, compares the OJ case and this one as some kind of titillating series of sports scandals that out-scandal Hollywood - like it's a good thing! Lest we all die of boredom, presumably. The killing (and killer) so dwarfs the victim and tragic loss of life it's almost laughable. When the journalist mentions John Cleese's joke about Pistorius's defence being that he was "totally legless" at the time and as a justifiable mockery against Cleese's ex-wife's recent alimony 'win', you wonder about a Monty Python connection, except that was comedy.

Hello PAS people. I am sorry to gatecrash your site with a change of subject, but is anyone out there offended by the recent front cover of TIME? Runner Oscar Pistorius bare chested, standing tall on his blades. The caption: "man, superman GUNMAN in increasing size so Gunman is massive suggesting it's the most important aspect of his life.
