  • Field Theory: Wellingtonista and Want-mas,

Any recommendations for units under $1500 much appreciated...

I hate to go really cheap, but Consumer recommended this $369 unit as top of the bunch for espresso machines

  • Up Front: Not Such a Hard Word After All,

Rumours are that the short man who was once on TV and is now getting ready to retire from radio wrote Veitch's sorry script.

Exactly which charities does John Key financially support? I have often wondered...for a man so wealthy...does anyone know, or has it been declared anywhere?

  • Stories: Christmas,

OK, so here's one from when I was fourteen (33 years ago).

My mum and I were going to a Christmas morning tea at our Church and she had promised to make a pavlova. She needed to make it the night before but arrived home from her work Christmas drinks drunk as a skunk.

So, while Mum lay semi-comatose on her bed she yelled instructions to her 14 year old son on "How to make a Pavlova". The pav was a great success - the right height and 'stickiness'.

The next morning we go to church, Mum with her headache and me with 'her' pav...and the compliments begin to flow about the wonderful consistency of her creation...how did she do it?...which recipe did she use?...

Every Christmas I remind her of it. That was the last time she made pavlova, and the last time she ate it.

BTW - the Edmonds Cookbook seems to be the most reliable recipe.

  • Island Life: A tale of two Audreys,

TVNZ now has Pippa Wetzell (young and moderately attractive, or compared to Kaye Gregory, a stunner) and Paul Henry (older, shorter, and slightly squashed).

    I'm moving to France!

  • Southerly: In Praise of Arthur,

I'm a great fan of the barber. Sadly it's getting harder and harder to find a good one. I used to go to Frank in Vivian Street, under the Trade Hall. You could be guaranteed to talk about Rugby, and to listen in on his conversations with his regular bevy of unionists and seamen.

Frank was the only barber I knew that did a cut throat on your neck - just tidying up those stray hairs and making a sharp line along the bottom of your sidies - of course this is totally illegal under the Health and Safety regulations - most barbers gave it up of their own accord once AIDS became prevalent in the late 80's.

Sadly Frank sold out to his niece after a cancer scare. She just doesn't have the same lack of conversation - and I always end up with hair down my back, and missed hairs (just the odd one) standing out from my Number One (all over).

I can't find anyone to replace him. Other so-called barber shops charge double the price, and are run by young 'flash-harry's' who it seems to me are just in it for the money.

I went and bought myself a pair of clippers - now, for the cost of spreading hair around the bathroom, I can cut my hair within an inch of it's life, have a shower afterwards, and it doesn't cost me a cent.

But I'm always on the lookout for a good old fashioned haircut: see my post here

  • OnPoint: Name and Snipe,

I found that the newly designed Herald Site always performed so badly, American Express ads or not, that I switched to Stuff...which I find to be a far superior online experience.

That pains me to say because I reckon Tim Pankhurst runs a very substandard daily in the Dominion Post!

I haven't seen the AMEX online ads...but coincidentally had my AMEX bill sitting on my desk waiting for me to chop up my card and return to sender.

    SNIP SNIP POST - done.
