I saw ACT's policy yesterday on a facebook group i'm in and suddenly the post has disappeared. It seemed very token gesture, I'm wondering if it's disappeared due to the negative comments it received.

This was great to read. As I said to my husband, a lot of this explains my situation, also living with Spina Bifida/Hydrocephalus. I am terrible with navigation and maths.

Just an update that I managed to get my service plan changed. The sexuality question is there so they can find out about transgender clients according to the agrncy person i spoke to. This section has been removed on my service plan.

He wasn't being nosey. Just felt obliged to ask a question that was on the form. Appropriate response would have been N/A.

It is gobsmacking that people using wheelchairs are routinely asked about their sex lives

I have recently changed agency and went through their service plan questionnaire with one of their staff members. One question related to sexuality and sexual needs. I asked if we really needed to go there and he said he ‘had to ask the question’. It is totally irrelevant to my service plan and what my support worker has to do for me every morning. My service plan has come back with that section answered in this way “manages sexuality and sexual needs independently” I was stunned and have asked a coordinator to explain why this needs to be there, and also to remove it. Both requests have been ignored. Even if I was to get a response I didn’t totally agree with, it would be something.

Love this. The song I will come down the aisle to when we marry next year.

I accidentally logged in as my partner… but anyway

Seriously, a mate with considerable hands on experience with disability was turned down for a job at a NASC as she was considered to be too ‘sympathetic’.

And yet as the case is with my “Service Co-ordinator” has no experience with disability/caregiving, gets away with working her support workers to the bone, and also doesn’t seem to “get” (in my case anyway) what is required from a client, and sends someone totally inexperienced for ONE session’s training before throwing that person in the deep end on her own the next day. Same person was rostered on to me this morning and didn’t turn up. That will be an interesting conversation on Tuesday morning.

My mum goes to most of my Dr's appts with me. The last specialist we saw addressed me the whole time - like mum wasn't in the room. "how very refreshing" I said to mum. More often than not it's her that gets spoken to - insulting considering I"m 40. Mum doesn't have to go with me, she's just interested in what's happening and it is often easier to get there with her help.

This used to happen to me when I was in school - mother had to constantly come up to the school to speak to teachers/pupils about the way I was being treated, ie pushed over into the garden.
