  • Stories: Hotels,

I tend to spot hotels and then return to stay there. The Twin Peaks Motor Lodge in Taupo HAD to be visited, if just for amusing sign photos. The Lodge itself was totally fine, if completely NON-weird. And had NO PIE. Next in line is the Klansman up North, which deserves a night I think. Purely for the AWFUL name.

And when I can summon the courage, it's going to be the Argyle in Hunterville. I've been there for lunch twice now, on the way through to Wellington, and it's been a little hair raising each time. Good burgers though. Terrifying collection of dragon memorabilia and freakish juxtaposition of thank-you letters from school groups and pornographic cartoons. And top marks for invoking the fear that it might be YOUR LAST NIGHT ON EARTH.

  • Speaker: Re-Entry III: The Eagle has Landed,

As a Kiwi currently in London (and not sure how much longer for given the state of the Visa laws) I'd like to throw out how SICK I am of the people who loudly announce that they will NEVER return because New Zealand is SO DULL. As one of our best local bands pointed out, you're bored because you're boring.

I'll have mixed feelings when the time comes to go back, mainly because I didn't expect to be facing it so soon. But I will be happy to be in New Zealand. Slightly worried about employment, fully willing to start something myself.

  • Speaker: Database Nation,

I was given two sim cards from various agencies when I first arrived. And bought one for the 3 Network without any bother at all.

Incidentally, when I called to register for an NI number I was told not to worry- they would have all my information on file since I had just completed the visa application process and would simply transfer it across. Three months later I still waiting for them to admit that this actually isn't possible...even though it does sound SO SIMPLE.

  • Speaker: Database Nation,

Nice post Tom! Hope Munich is lovely.

The really interesting (scary) thing for me, was that when this information was first released (maybe about six weeks ago now?), all the reporting couched the ID card system within the immigrant debate. Meaning that very few UK residents that I spoke to about it had any idea that it would eventually be affecting the wider population, let along THEM PERSONALLY.

I'm still not sure that most people realise that although immigrants and visa-holders will be carrying ID cards soon (and what a lovely prospect), this is just part of a roll out. Soon biometrics will prevail...

  • Cracker: Being there is everything.…,

I'm kind of intrigued by the idea that you shouldn't do whatever you can in these situations to help yourself...is someone actually suggesting that you DON'T pull whatever strings you can? Better to be humble and luggage-less? Seems a TINY bit self defeating to me.

I vote open plan. But with a 'quiet phone' somewhere, in case you need to talk to someone about something sensitive (work related or not) and maybe don't need someone shouting with laughter behind you.

I'm seething! Did anyone else just get stung by the Sopranos spoiler in the Herald article on the Clinton Campaign Song? Maybe I wasn't paying enough attention but I definitely did not expect a retelling of the ending to sneak in there!

And I'm with Heather! He should be in everything! Am looking forward to the University Challenge-y film he has coming out...

  • Cracker: Is there a Sub in the City?,

The really confusing part about this column is that she states that people in Auckland don't date- so what's it about? Surely she's not going to write about drunken one night stands? Maybe she's single-handedly going to bring back 'premium content' after all...

I had a Panther! I loved it so much. I used to Turtle Wax it (which I must do to my car someday) and wear special cycling gloves to ride it. Good times...
