  • Speaker: Rewarding competence,

This was good, although I would argue the swing to left us because Labour has demonstrated the power of a successful collective repsonse to issues.
The "market" can't protect us from Covid, just as it can't solve every problem.
The swing to the right of the past 30 years has stopped and gone back the other way in 2020.
We need government to fix the big issues - climate change, housing, inequality, etc.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Recalling the Rascals,

Saw Mark Williams play with the Rodger Fox big band in Wellington last night.
Unfortunately there were no gems from Heed The Call, but a fun gig regardless.

  • Hard News: Trump 2018,

Everything about Trump feels like watching a car crash, then reminding yourself you shouldn't look, but looking nonetheless.

  • Hard News: Meet the new bots, same as…,

Part of me is: that's a bit strange.
But most of me is: is this some kind of "twitter circle-jerk" meaning nothing at all?
    (not meaning to be rude)

That said, seems like there's little point in arguing on twitter.
Nobody goes there to get their mind changed ...

They might call themselves the Chiefs, but they sure don't act like it ..

  • Speaker: After the Apocalypse,

    Fascinating article, thanks.
Apologies for the bluntness, but how much would that visit have reduced the author's life expectancy?

  • Hard News: Friday Music: The Wizards of…,

I am possibly the sole proponent of a theory that Cold Chisel were the equivalent of the Smiths - by chronicling the teenage experience of growing up in Australia.
Don Walker is certainly an under-rated songwriter.
They sounded better with Ian Moss' soulful voice: The Party's Over or Misfits

  • Hard News: Art with a job to do,

I wanted Red Peak and didn't rank the others. I'm thinking of abstaining in the second ballot. I don't want the current colonial flag but neither do I want the Weetbix flag.
I won't be celebrating the result either way.

Although if the vote is no change, there may be little public appetite for another attempt later on.

  • Hard News: The positive option of Red Peak,

Red Peak number 1 in first referendum. No other votes.
Then Red Peak or no change.

Really excited to see the enthusiasm for Red Peak - seems like none of the other four have much of a buzz about them.

  • Hard News: The positive option of Red Peak, in reply to Shaun Lott,

Read the link at the top of Russell's post.
It explains the Maori and European (British) aspects of Red Peak.
