    There was even a protest

What will it take to get the NZ disability community to protest???

  • Speaker: SIBs: The reality of…,

Of course the market knows best.

Look who are the successful. Look at our Leaders.

Are they disabled? Are they mentally ill?

    No they are not.

They are hale, healthy and rich.

Because they played the market and won.

    So there.

  • Up Front: Not Uniform,

    Gender neutral uniforms....hell yes.

Weather appropriate, easy wash and dry, non-iron, hard wearing and reasonably priced. Not only convenient, but avoids the stress of Young Person's angst if they do not own the latest 'must have' fashion garment.

Believe me, this is a huge issue in some schools.

Looking at the photo, despite the same dress...individuals stand out.

As for the Ministry guidelines....goodness me, another day that I give thanks for being past the school age kid stage. Having said that, I acknowledge that difference can lead to bullying and this needs to be addressed. A small rural high school some 40 years ago. Two openly gay male students (not a couple) and a 'trans' (watch me get this wrong) boy. (He was more a she than a he?)...Anyway, all was out in the open, no bullying. Scroll forward 20 years and straight but not macho nerdy students were unmercifully bullied by the rugby types. Took one of the nerds to lose it and roundly beat the bully to get it to stop. This was a boys school...and the DP was awestruck that the bullied student fought back. Much head shaking.
While it is useful to talk about gender and sexuality and difference....can't we start by really, really encouraging tolerance? And respect.

    http://www.stuff.co.nz/manawatu-standard/news/69032551/child-with-no-fear-died-after-falling-into-water-tank-says-coroner

A coroner has refused to blame the death of an autistic child on poor supervision by adults, saying people cannot watch children “like hawks”.

    I don’t know.

Four adults in the house….known risk…..so very, very sad.

And don't you just love it when the circle is completed....http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10644993

the welfare working advisory group looking at the big driver of future costs: long-term invalids and sickness beneficiaries, a group he describes as "this big hard lump of long-term waste of human potential".

English says the MSD is not set up to deal with them.

Rather, it is set up to deal with "the easy stuff" - the unemployment and the domestic purposes benefits.

"They do the easy stuff and they do it very well, but they don't worry about these guys. If they were ACC customers, we would be spending a lot of money on trying to move them. They cost a bit less on sickness and invalids [benefits], not a hell of a lot less, but we do nothing and we are actually doing nothing to reduce this very large long-term liability."

    Well, they're doing something now.

    And the Herald catches up.....http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11457938

"Where we succeed, there are opportunities to help people fulfil their potential, a chance to break inter-generational cycles of dependency and, in the long term, potential savings for taxpayers.

"So social bonds are a consistent fit with our wider social investment approach which aims to better understand both the drivers and risks of social dysfunction and where we can have the greatest impact in improving people's lives."

    So.

    add this ...http://nzinitiative.org.nz/site/nzinitiative/files/publications/publications-2015/Social%20Bonds%20-%20web.pdf

Government benefits by transferring a variable
degree of financial risk to the private sector.
    SIBs demonstrate which programmes work
or don’t work, so that effective models can
    potentially be brought to scale.

ƒ As an alternative to making charitable
donations, SIBs allow investors to more directly
improve social outcomes for favoured causes,
and support advances in measuring successful
models and building an evidence base, while
earning a financial return for their involvement.

ƒ Finally, service providers can hope to gain from
    enhanced delivery flexibility and broadened
access to investor expertise and capital.

Now, where's the bit about the benefits to NZ citizens who need to use the service?

  • Access: It’s just a bout of Chronic Sorrow, in reply to Marc C,

My days as both may be numbered Marc C. I am not techno savvy by any means...but I do have a nose...so to speak. Unfortunately, I have gone looking for treasure online and have on more than one occasion received quite forceful "you do NOT have access to these files" messages..which, of course makes one all the more keen to find.

The downside is that this may. or may not, attract a certain type of attention. The risk to other users of our home account? I'm not sure, but those with greater knowledge of these things suggest that perhaps I do not do what I do when the household changes providers. We will hopefully be back on the road by then, where internet access is spasmodic.
One bit of advice I will pass on to others...always make a copy ( a real one...not a link), even if you do a screen shot, or copy/paste. There have been documents that are there one day, and gone into the ether the next. And back up your hard drive...very interesting to see the reaction from some when, even after your laptop is stolen, you can still haul out that 'disappeared doc', the one they would like us to forget...All this cloak and dagger shit is ridiculous though when we are talking about how our government responds to the needs of vulnerable citizens.

Not questioning, Sacha, just expressing sorrow at the wickedness of it all.

Is it acceptable to use these threads to keep the community informed as to what is going on?

And to perhaps share some of our personal experiences that other' s may relate to?

The two threads do seemed to have evolved into this...?

    Difficult choice.

    "Sorrow" or "Wicked"

    Hmmm
