  • Hard News: "OK Boomer" wins Public…, in reply to Bruce Thorpe,

It is not about age or generational culture. It is about greed and capitalism.

And to be fair, that's usually what it really means when it's used. It's about the blitheness of people who don't have to worry.

I'm comfortable with the young folk expressing their frustration in what is really a pretty light way.

Righto – that's it! The korero phase has ended and I'm going to compile the longlist.

Thanks everyone! Stay tuned for voting!

  • Hard News: The Cannabis Legalisation and…, in reply to Paul Campbell,

So I can grow my own in my old age, but can I buy seeds?

Yes, assuming they follow through on the Cabinet paper's recommendations, from a licensed supplier of seeds. And supposedly only from such a supplier. This is another hard-to-police thing: you're hardly going to stop people saving and sharing their own.

  • Hard News: The Cannabis Legalisation and…, in reply to Shane Le Brun,

I think driving lower consumption via legalization is a bit of a failed policy objective, however, driving lower rates of problematic use is far more achievable.

Agreed. A slight increase in overall incidence in exchange for a substantial reduction in overall harm is a reasonable expectation. But that's a harder sell.

  • Access: Thank you to those stroppy…,

Thanks Hilary. It is never lost on me that there was a time when we would have been under pressure to give up our own children to institutionalisation.

Fascinating story. Sad to realize that 25 years has passed with relatively little change.

Re-reading that whole issue, I had that "not much has changed" feeling more than once.

XR is going to have to be very careful about things like the Shadwell protest yesterday.

Disrupting a public transport service (and an electric train to boot) doesn't actually make any sense.

  • Top Gear and reality TV,

Thanks guys. They seem to particularly target this thread for some reason, so I'll close now.

  • Speaker: Catalonia, interrupted, in reply to Tom Semmens,

The Catalonians need to get over themselves.

Would you also agree that the Spanish government should stop sentencing political leaders it finds troublesome to very long jail terms?

  • Hard News: A fun but flawed weed documentary, in reply to Alfie,

The drawn-out inclusion of the Wolf sequence was badly misjudged. His local company went belly-up in January and the man’s past is well-documented. Why waste airtime giving him a platform like this? The production company had eight months to fix this, or to at least inform us about the conflict between this person’s business and interpersonal skills. Poor show.

Quite. He should never have been given the platform. I'm sure they wanted him for colour, but it was a terrible editorial choice.

    An opportunity sadly lost.

There's talk of a Part 3 focused specifically on our options, which would help.
