I think it isn't beyond the realms of possibility that it can turn a profit or at least break even. It will draw more to a league test than Mt Smart will so the Kiwis are likely to shift there for tests, and other such things.
The killer is depreciation, if it ends up costing $700M at 50-70yrs life span ( from wellington stadium trust financial reports) that is $10-14Million that has to found every year before you can talk about making any profit to payoff the interest on any loan,
While events like the 7s sell heaps of tickets, you will find that most of this money goes to the promoter, the stadium actually only gets a very small share, if this stadium goes ahead, unless you are going to get 50K+ ppl, why would you not go to Nrth Harbour/Mt Smart/Eden park as the ground rental will be cheaper.
What we need to sit down and do is work out is will the cost of the Rugby world cup and the legacy it leave actually make money for Auckland (NZ), from the poor numbers I have seen they will not
According to SPARC's website the event will only yield at max $500 million in benifit to NZ, so spending any more that $500 million seems stupid

It is estimated that it will generate $380 million in direct additional expenditure within New Zealand, with a resultant impact on GDP of $408 million. In addition the tax take for the government is expected to exceed $90 million. This additional expenditure will come mainly from international visitors purchasing accommodation, hospitality and travel, which will result in further indirect spending. -
Did I hear correctly on the radio this morning that Marian Street thinks 2 weeks is heaps of time to decide on such an issue, and that we are all sick of it now, (and that 6 months consultation would be unbearable)

I presume you are still aware the the proposed upgrade to Eden Park requires "a suspension of the democratic process and RMA" as well.
Hang on, havent eden park been working through the standard process till now, with the assumption that they would end up with having to go to the environment court in their time lines,
according to the ACC the application was lodged on August 9
resource consent applicationhearing were due to start last week, but have been delayed while this all goes on, So I am not sure it is true to say they will need an RMA suspension,

Whops a little off track, but these issues all have to be tackled. Where is aucklands skytrain linking the city to the airport and major shopping centres.
Although Vancouver only got its airport link approved (RAV to be Canada line) when they got the 2010 winter games, The original skytrain turned up to link Canada place to the science centre for Expo `86
I too agree the little blue tub boats are the best, but false creek is a heap less choppy than Ak Harbour :)
Auckland *needs* some form of rail link to the airport but short of tunneling all the way, it will have to roll through Epsom or Mt Eden which I suspect will draw more objections that Eden Park,
BTW: has anyone heard if the space on the wharves will be replaced by additional reclaimation, or is the port just expected to "get over it"

In any project you have 3 variables,
- Time
- Quality
- Cost,You can only ever fix two of them, given that we have already said that Time is fixed ( must be built for RWC2011), then in the case of anything not going to plan, either Quality or Cost must move, - I expect they have been told that a half assed version is *not* acceptable given the political flack, thus cost is where everything gets absorbed,

What seems odd about all of the politicking is not only the startling absence of Carlaw Park from the pro/con discussions (officially dismissed, for some unstated reason) but also the tank farm, which seems to be a spot which would satisfy the most important criteria and have least negative impact.
Just my 2 cents worth.Tank farm would be a great site, but no chance of it being ready for RWC2011, ARC has been pressuring the current tenents ( all with legal leases) to make other arrangements when these leases come up for re-negotiation, but the signs are not great.
Also the oil companies' pipeline from marsden point ends there, so any new site would also have to have the pipeline laid to it,
The impression I get of the waterfornt continues to improve as actual drawings appear, but the fact that the "design is not yet finalised" still rings big bells in the back of my head, along with Cath Tizard poo pooing resistance to the waterfront with "its just like the comments against the aotea cetre when it was proposed" doean't exactly fill me with confidence given the cost overruns and current state of the carpark.
