  • Hard News: Arrest the bastards at the border,

I'm sure Joe Kiwi at the time felt that Fay's knighthood was a just reward
How true. There was no easily accessible 'Public Address' back then :)

And the introduction of the accommodation supplement that gets paid to?
Darn I can't stop myself. Lowering the tone *ALERT* Steven do you know anyone who worked for WINZ at the time ? Its my understanding that a) the accommodation supplement level didn't cover all the rent rise and quite a number of people still had to move; and b) many were either unaware or too proud and didn't apply for it (of course they had to apply, it wasn't automatically given).
For me it was also a surprise to learn DPB stats show that the vast majority of people are on it average 2-4 years. Only a small number rely on it for a lot longer. Hardly surprising, its not that nice place to be.

  • Hard News: Arrest the bastards at the border,

. . . the maze of entitlements and regulations that is WINZ . . .
What does any of this have to do with Fay and Richwhite, anyway?

It wasn't just about the 'tens of thousands' for me. Was once in a situation where I thought I could be prosecuted but it turned out both WINZ and I had made errors. The thoughts and feelings before finding it was redeemable were unforgettably gut-wrenching. You're right about the fear Slarty. I'm more sympathetic towards beneficiaries and how I view the WINZ big picture these days. Sorry, will try not to lower the tone again.

  • Hard News: Arrest the bastards at the border,

Does any of the above make me a nasty right-wing beneficiary basher?
No I guess not. Please bear in mind the maze of entitlements and regulations that is WINZ inevitably mean errors and omissions are made by both sides. And there definately are arrears repayment schedules, put yourself at ease about that one.

  • Hard News: Arrest the bastards at the border,

I wonder whether this proposed new Bill would have saved us from the likes of F&R. As I understand it, the onus of proof will be reversed, it means an end to 'innocent until proven guilty'

The Serious Fraud Office would be able to seek a High Court order freezing a person's assets if it could show that there were reasonable grounds to believe that a person had benefited either directly or indirectly from serious criminal activity.

The forfeiture will apply to those assets which the person cannot prove that they have acquired legitimately and regardless of the fact that the person has not been convicted of criminal

  • Island Life: An appetite for scandal,

Millie's mother is now Dr Hinemoa Elder - a psychiatrist - specialising in the mental health of adolescents

Good spotting, so young Millie may have heard it all before. I hope Dr E has as good a grip on reality as stephen walker of tokyo.
Given how enthusiastic Kiwi experimenters are, if it was as true about cannabis and p as so many media headlines holler, surely there would have been a very detectable increase in psychosis incidence by now ?

but P couldn't be what we used to stir into our coffee could it ?

Of course that should read 'what I used to stir into my' coffee . . .

I cannot fathom how people can even mention crystal methamphetamine and MDMA in the same sentence

    Amen.

Some folks from LEAP - http://www.leap.cc Law Enforcement Against Prohibition - were here a couple of years ago, and Eddie Ellison (20+ years at Scotland Yard) told me meth was only briefly popularly in UK. It was all over in 18 months because users realised what a cheap (there) shite drug it was and went back to E or perhaps onto trying whatever else. He thought NZ's geographical isolation might also be partly to blame for its longevity here.

This probably isn't the place, but I know crystal meth was available in Auckland by late 70s, but P couldn't be what we used to stir into our coffee could it ? If so I'm glad I never thought to try smoking it.

  • Cracker: See More on 3,

Craig you can call me snotty and condescending if thats how you think it came across. I just miss the good ol' days when most people could read, write, and speak decent English. Its one of the reasons I like Public Address. I am also really disappointed to see common errors in newsletters and notices that come home from my son's school too. Woo hoo !!

O Gawd, I watched Prime news this evening; Suzie of the perfect diction, always a pleasure. But a sweet young thing reporting on the anniversary of our nuclear legislation couldn't even say the word properly. Aghhhhh . . . how can anybody but George Dubya make newkular out of nuclear ? . . . need self medication

Silly thing to complain about really. One thing life - and a good cleavage - taught me early was males of almost any age just can't drag their eyes up often enough to hide their leering. Its funny.

Much more to the point is the low levels of, dare I say it, 'fair and balanced' quality current affairs from both TV organisations. Seems to me there has been a downward spiral ever since Tuku's undies . . .
