  • Hard News: About Campbell Live, in reply to simon g,

Hoping a private channel does serious journalism is no substitute for having a public channel that’s obliged to.

Seriously, apart from a few brief years in the early 1960s when British import academic Austin Mitchell was taken seriously as a public intellectual on our single-channel baby BBC, did that type of public broadcasting ever deliver the goods in NZ? I suspect that a good case could be made that Campbell is as good as we’ve ever had it.

Onetime Muldoon nemesis Brian Edwards has long declined into self-imposed irrelevance. Simon Walker’s apparently fearless grilling of Muldoon (they were in separate studios) turned out to be part of an exercise in career-building chutzpah.

Fran O’Sullivan is marvellous this morning. Looks at the political angle.

She makes a good point about Bryce Edwards' credulity re. David Farrar's manipulations. While Edwards' regular linking to disingenuous and self-deluding nonsense along with genuinely worthwhile commentary on his blog doesn't necessarily imply endorsement, his otherwise excellent Herald pieces occasionally betray a disappointing academic unworldliness.

  • Hard News: Media Take: The Easter Show, in reply to Russell Brown,

My colleagues Toi and Tipare believed the Tamakis’ work in rescuing people mired in lives of substance abuse and violence didn’t get enough credit.

I can only hope that there's more to Toi and Tipare's belief than the kind of lazy and condescending complacency expressed here. Tahu Potiki's wealth and privilege stems from the same feudal collusion that creates the conditions that Tamaki exploits.

    The Life of Brian

I wonder when was the last time anyone watched the DVD of his investiture - if that's the word - as a bishop. It was a pricey item back in the day, leading to speculation as to whether it included bonus bloopers.

I’d still rather enjoy kicking back and chatting some with Brian. is he genuine though?

He's not the messiah, he's just a naughty boy.

In Vietnam on the Mekong Delta we visited a church made up of 4 or five diverse religions.

Sounds like the very colourful Cao Đài, which has a spot for Victor Hugo in its pantheon.

  • Envirologue: Branding a Post-Predator…, in reply to Tom Semmens,

...why not have every 18 year old spend 12 months in a conservation army. Imagine 70,000 plus young people trapping, poisoning, shooting, cleaning, replanting, weeding, spying on dirty dairying, standing sentry on individual Kakapo…

AND in their spare time they could learn civics, visit old people

You floated something like this a while back. As I recall it involved kitting out a younger male member of your extended whanau in lederhosen & lemon squeezer, with flow-on values of identity, self-worth, etc.

Couched in the right phraseology it could be the kind of thing that Creative NZ might get behind. But please, for pity's sake, wait until us old people have died off.

Jimmy Ryan’s amazing before and after drone video of Dallington.

Quietly glad to see a video where the music isn’t Coldplay.

That reminded me of an ancient one-sentence review of a Rita Coolidge album: "It's got a nice drone, you can nod to it".

See also the Mitsubishi Pajero. In some Spanish dialects, that means “cowboy”, apparently. In others…

I have a Catalan comic somewhere, the authorship of which I can’t attribute from memory, where a bunch of inept islamic zealots set sail across the Mediterranean to invade Spain. Their battle cry is “Viva la coitus interruptus”. They make landfall on an island where they startle a masturbating lighthouse keeper with the cry “Viva la pajotus interruptus”.
