    Don’t knock the cask!

Yeah right. Seen from the air in a sunny day, the reflected glitter from inflated cheap plonk casks along the riverbeds around Alice Springs is an unforgettable sight. The wretched things even lodge high in the branches of trees where the floods carry them.

  • Hard News: #GE2015: Proper Mad, in reply to Russell Brown,

Unbelievably, he now appears to be doing a u-turn on his u-turn.

    What a prat.

As long as he owns his own excursions into asshattery I don't see the problem. As a funnyman playing at being a public intellectual I haven't noticed him coming out with anything nearly as risible as this.

Is Russell Brand *still* talking?... he should take himself back to the rock from under which he crept.

And what about those horrid occupy types. Just imagine the dry cleaning bills if they'd had their way.

Share an Idea, which purported to involve ordinary citizens in shaping post-quake Chch, was never anything more than a cynical PR hoax. According to the CC Council site the wretched thing won an international award, which you can “read all about” here. Yet another spin doctors’ picnic at the citizens' expense.

We’re getting to be a whiny, complainy, almost seditious wee bunch….

    Thank goodness :)

And unlike so many online opinionfests, all pretty civil so far.

  • Access: Some aspects of New Zealand’s…, in reply to Angela Hart,

and here’s a piece which shows how nasty some government departments can be in these cases, by way of e-mail read in court

The last sentence in that link is really chilling. There was a Down syndrome girl in my sister’s class at St. Joseph’s Primary, Levin, in the early 1960s. She was one of a number of children of a local businessman and his wife. Perhaps the proximity of what later became the Kimberley Centre affected their decision to raise her in as ‘normal’ a manner as possible.

While I imagine that they received no Government help beyond the then universal child allowance they seem to have been free to do so. Any suggestion of the kind of bureaucratic persecution that Margaret Spencer and her son appear to have endured would have been seen as outrageous back in those supposedly unenlightened times. Yet another ghastly reminder that progress is never automatic. Given the opportunity, the abusive attitudes that might have been assumed to be safely relegated to the past will reassert themselves.

Don’t waste your wit on twits,
    etc.

Surely even the irritatingly disabled warrant our compassion. That said, a particularly obnoxious visually impaired individual who once demanded that I help him across Sydney's William Street, right outside the old Institute for the Blind, has only my good nature to thank that I didn't leave him stranded on the median strip.
