  • Speaker: Insert Token Here,

I use my breasts to get attention.

As at least one of those on the list can attest, I think it's usually true that if a man has dressed in a way that his breasts get attention, it will not have been intentional.

  • Speaker: Insert Token Here,

Watch your stereotypes, pal. Hillbillies with banjos aren't a purely Cantabrian phenomenon.

Nope, there's also the 'Naki. And the remainder of the South Island, of course ;-)

And this is from one who spent 14 looong years in Christchurch, and some very early years in Essex, so I know a bit about geographic stereotyping myself, innit?

  • Speaker: Insert Token Here,

That Gender Genie, and the articles that it refers to, is an interesting thing. When I write about architecture, it identifies me as male, but when I write about cocktails, it picks me as female!

I guess that makes some sort of sense when you read:

Similarly, what the gender-identifying algorithm picks up on is that women are apparently far more likely than men to use personal pronouns -- ''I,'' ''you'' and ''she'' especially. Men, on the other hand, prefer so-called determiners -- ''a,'' ''the,'' ''that,'' ''these'' -- along with numbers and quantifiers like ''more'' and ''some.'' What this suggests ... is that women are more comfortable talking or thinking about people and relationships, while men prefer to contemplate things.

I write about about architecture and urbanism in a way that is, if not exactly dispassionate, then certainly analytical and about things. My writing about drinks and bars is more likely to refer to my own personal experiences, so that is probably structured in a way that indicates thinking about "people and relationships".

So, what it boils down to is that (according to the texts they studied) men and women tend to write about different aspects of experience. I wonder whether, given a brief to write about a specific topic, the distinction would be as noticeable? I can certainly imagine my more informal writings (personal emails, discussion board comments, poetry) being much more "feminine" than the things I write that are explicitly much less personal.

So that reveals the secret ingredient in the spray: Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.

  • Hard News: Mighty Indeed,

Kerry ("deadpossum") has some photos of the Blams on Flickr. We hope to get some more photos of the night up soon.

And wow, what a night! I think in retrospect that "24 hour diner" should have been higher up the list of things Wellington needs, after the last bunch of us got kicked out of a kebab shop at 4am. There was a wonderfully surreal "Soup Nazi" moment though:

"You eat here or take away?"

    "Eat here, please"

"No! We closed! You take away!"

  • Hard News: Farce About,

    Paul:

it also doesn't work with my browser - type my whole address in, click submit and it complains I haven't filled it in.

When you type in the address, does it bring up the mini-map to confirm the location? And what browser are you using? We've had a devil of a time with IE6.

Actually, before this turns into a Broadband Map help forum, send any specific technical feedback directly to me at: tom (at) projectx.co.nz. This is all useful advice (that's what the "BETA"'s for!), but it's probably best to keep this thread on-topic.

  • Hard News: Farce About,

It's actually working out what's what on the map. I know it's nearly all Telecom networks, but it's hard to see what else there is. Maybe I'm just challenged.

No, it does get messy in places. I'm tweaking the Telecom network areas for central and southeast Auckland, because there were areas in the GIS files that overlapped, so once they're displayed as translucent layers they get too opaque and block the others. It's also hard to design a key to identify the colour scheme when the colours are laid over a multi-coloured map, so the coverage areas, on the maps may not always match exactly what's on the legend, depending on the background.

Until I worked on this project, I never realised just how limited the coverage was in Auckland. Compare Telstra's coverage in Wellington to the Auckland offerings, and it's amazingly different.

There's not much in the way of private business added to the map yet, but we've got dozens in the moderation queue, so there'll be more to see shortly.

  • Hard News: Farce About,

the Broadband Map ... Only complaint: the key is hard to read.

I'll take the blame for that one! Any specific suggestions? Is it the key for the demand points, the networks, or both?
