  • OnPoint: Bandwagon Hobos,

Throw a fishing line into the sea. It's real cheap.

Yes, I do that. And I grow my own vegetables. And I have a stand of fruit trees. And I hunt wild pigs in the bush on weekends. With my bare hands so the pig has a chance ...
If only the local council would let me keep chickens and a cow - I'd really be self sufficient.

If they succeed in having the local price of milk pegged to a local price cap, can we have the same for seafood? We've had to pay 'export prices' for fish for years, making it very expensive. The obvious argument is that seafood isn't a 'staple' like milk/dairy to which I say ... why is that?

Seafood is a 'luxury' because it is so expensive. But imagine if it was cheaper meaning you could eat it 3-4 nights a week. That would be a lot healthier for our society than the crap we eat now. (Presuming everyone doesn't get their seafood servings by buying crumbed fishsticks at the supermarket).

  • Hard News: Too Good to Be True,

Doh! MikeE already said what I just said.

And as they said in Blazing Saddles "we don't need no stinking Badgers".

I thought you had that wrong, since I was certain it was from a Cheech and Chong movie, but Wiki says you're right. Almost. In Blazing Saddles they said 'Badges', it was 'Badgers' in a Weird Al Yancovic movie. Turns out that there's a looong list of movies parodying the original ...

The original quotation comes from the 1948 film The Treasure of the Sierra Madre with Humphrey Bogart. In one of the scenes in the movie a Mexican bandit leader (Gold Hat played by Alfonso Bedoya) is trying to convince Fred C Dobbs (played by Bogart) and company that they are the Federales.

Dobbs: 'If you're the police where are your badges?'
Gold Hat: 'Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges! I don't have to show you any stinkin' badges!'

This in turn was adapted from B Traven's 1927 novel upon which the movie was based:

"All right," Curtain shouted back. "If you are the police, where are your badges? Let's see them."

"Badges, to god-damned hell with badges! We have no badges. In fact, we don't need badges. I don't have to show you any stinking badges, you god-damned cabrón and ching' tu madre! Come out from that shit-hole of yours. I have to speak to you."

If anyone feels like slacking I well recommend the wiki link. Everyone from Mel Brooks to The Monkees to Jim Jarmusch to The Simpsons have done it (but oddly no mention of Cheeh & Chong).

  • Hard News: Too Good to Be True,

I nod and wonder exactly what a hot 30yr sister of a friend has been doing for the past decade on luxury yachts.

There's a clip on YouPorn actually ... (and [seriously], Totally NSFW had the clip of Paris off her nut asking 'Are You My Nigger?' - evidently the reason her and Nicole split)

:-) I wouldn't believe everything you hear either. Mediterranean? We are talking South America for Coca leaf. I don't think exporting the leaf is big business for cocaine manufacturing. Bulky. I imagine quantity may be the issue for your friend.

__Quality__, not quantity surely? It's easier to get coke to the Carribean therefore less expensive than getting it to the Med. So the Med coke will be cut (diluted) to recover the transport costs. Bit like Auckland in the 80s (or was I just totally ripped off?) which was much weaker than Sydney.

Good lord. I agree with Ralston.

Yes but there's another subtext. Ralston agrees with you that the venue/conference was legitimate; but then he goes on to suggest Clark kowtowed to popular opinion, forcing Street to eat the words she said the day before in defence of her ministry.

Once again the Government threw a ministry to the wolves, which goes a long way to explaining why we have a timid, risk-averse public service. Once, there was a principle of ministerial responsibility and ministers defended their public servants. Now, public servants are easy and regular scapegoats when the political heat goes on.

Clark could have chosen to stick with Street and tough it out, maintaining that the conference was cost effective and legitimate. Instead she caved quickly, giving creedence to National's campaign claims that there is too much tax money wasted on govt services/bureacracy.

(But in Clark's defence I also wonder if she had any choice but to buckle; given that the media seemed hellbent to push this issue in one direction only. The MSM: Never let the facts or the maths get in the way of the 'angle'.)

It is one of the enduring myths of New Zealand politics that voters were destined to have a further referendum to confirm or reject MMP. No promises of such were made before the 1992 plebiscite or the 1993 referendum.

Next you'll be telling me that Eight glasses of water a day is not a medical necessity either.

I'm all for full representation but is lowering the threshold for getting a party into Parliament really going to help the process? How bogged down will we get if we have seven minority parties-of-one? Ditto for a 'Senate' - how does that help the process of getting laws enacted? It doesn't seem to have achieved anything in the UK and US ... one side is always blocking the other.

  • Hard News: Friday Fun,

As one woman on TPM says, WTF?

    from that link:

Because these Clinton people saying they’ll vote for McCain — they sound like a vegan at a restaurant saying, “Oh, you’re out of the tofu and sprouts? Then just give me a bloody steak and a side of veal cheeks.”

    Love it!
(I've actually done similar myself - that's when you realise you have an anger management problem)

Re: Dunkin' Donuts pulling their TV ad because rightwingnuts argued Rachel Ray's scarf was Jihadist (yes, it was waaay back) -- I took a few minutes on Friday to email the company and let them know I thought they were reactionary idiots. They took a few minutes to reply:

Thank you for sharing your comments. We always appreciate hearing from our customers. As of this past
weekend, we are no longer using the online ad featuring Rachael Ray wearing a black-and-white silk scarf
with a paisley design. Our decision was based solely on the fact that the possibility of misperception
detracted from the intent of the ad, which was to promote iced coffee -- nothing more, nothing less.

At Dunkin' Donuts, we value all our customers and are committed to making your experiences with us
memorable and pleasant. Thank you, again, for making us aware of your concerns.

(The use of bold is mine)
I have to admit some grudging respect for their PR team. That is a fine example of the Dark Arts of PR. How can I boycott their product when they are so nice to me?

  • Hard News: Friday Fun,

And that'll do. I'm trying to get my head around the MCH review of digital broadcasting regulation for my Listener column, and work up some Newsmash for next week's Media7.

Heh heh. According to The Man From Sky you can save time by winging the latter. According to him no-one's watching! If he means Freeview he's right, I'm not watching. If he means YouTube it's a differrent story.

PS Congratulations to Nick Dwyer for Making Tracks on C4. We loved it in our house. The debut episode turned out to be less about the local cover versions of...

My word yes, that was very impressive. I too thought the NZOA funding was tenuous, but I'm more than happy to overlook it since the final product was so good. I'm surprised more hasn't been said by the critics, but I think Nick's got a big future ahead of him in broadcasting. (And I knew he spoke Japanese, but Portuguese as well!!?? WTF :)

BTW (off topic) in looking for a link to that comment by the Sky Boss quoted in Friday's Herald (I couldn't) I came across this, which I thought was interesting:

four major US companies - Ameritech, Bell Atlantic, Time Warner and TCI - acquired a 51.1 per cent interest (in SkyTV) through a joint-venture partnership after the National Government canned the overseas ownership restrictions on broadcasting companies.

  • Hard News: In tha Hoodie,

Don't like graffiti? He doesn't care

As a former graffitti artist that story just leaves me cold. Not that I dispute it, it's just sad that it's come to this. (and by joves, couldn't that story have written itself? I can imagine many disgruntled citizens will clip and keep that for future 'See? Give 'em a dose of military discipline!' rants)

Here’s a positive Hoodie Day story.

And here's another. Many times over the past 2 decades I have resolved to start my own friggin' radio station so I could play some decent music! And I have continued to sit on my ass doing nothing about it while others have launched George, Base, Fleet, et al.

In my own defence: while I could grasp the concept of modern technology making starting your own radio station easier, I just couldn't get a handle on the actual technology. But not this kid. He's just gone ahead and done it
