  • Hard News: Morning in Auckland,

Hey Craig - you should contact The Standard for payment of residuals since they have made up a new word with your name:

Eventually, (to misuse one of my favourite lines from “Californication”) he [sprout: deleted on the grounds that it sounds too much like a Craig Ranapiaism] your cat.

  • Hard News: Yet More Hobbit,

The dispute now requires a skilled mediator who can find a way out for Simon Whipp and MEAA to call off the boycott without losing face. Neither seems likely. It will be very hot in a hobbit costume in Australia.

OK. thanks. It doesn't ring true - AE wants to meet Spada, Spada trying to phone AE to arrange meeting, CTU wants them to have meaningful dialogue etc.

Somewhere, someone's not returning any phone calls.

  • Hard News: Yet More Hobbit,

Someone needs to call Jennifer and remind her what she actually said on TV about wanting to "get in a room" with Spada.

I have only heard her say she wants to meet the "producers" meaning Three Foot Seven. I can't recall her saying she wants to meet Spada.

Unless there are meetings we don't know about.

The only meetings reported today have been Jackson/Walsh with Brownlee, including Gerry having discussions over the phone with JWL.

Gerry must obviously see this as a gift horse chance to redeem his public image.

  • Hard News: Yet More Hobbit,

On one hand, losing the film to Australia would be the best of the bad case scenarios, because a lot of NZ film crew may still be employed in the production.

But imagine the furore of The Hobbit being made in Australia. AE would have nowhere to hide.

However, whilst the relevant parties are talking in private it is most productive to let them do this without adding more confusion to the mixture.

I hope this is true, and that the "relevant parties" inculdes AE and Spada talking together.

If they are talking in private, it is still important to let the media know, otherwise the news vacumn will get filled by rumours.

  • Hard News: Hobbit Wars,

I can't think of how actors can remain independent contractors and have a collective agreement that includes remuneration. The CTU seems adamant that this can be done, but I can't think of an example in another industry.

Real estate agents are self-employed, GST registered, claim expenses against income etc but their contract is with the individual real estate company, not the industry as a whole. Remuneration levels are set by the company and usually can't be negotiated - if you want a better commission rate you move to another company.

They may have a standardised agreement, set by the company, but it is not a collective agreement.

So I take it that the problem for actors is that they don't join up to SAG or one of its associate organisations, then they risk being black-listed from future projects.

Then isn't the obvious answer that a group of rogue, scab actors band together to work in non-approved SAG movies made outside the US. More cost effective projects attractive to the big studios like Warner, and which will be given to rogue producers like Jackson. The more "scabs", the more talent available to choose from.

And once a year, catch up with the SAG team at the Oscars.

Rocky is a pioneer of sound post-production in NZ -- founder of Marmalade Studios

Well, knock me down with a feather. I googled his name and couldn't find anything (found a lot of other things).

Great name. Big ups to Mr and Mrs Douche.
