The cost of bedding this in proved too expensive, so the track was laid flat, limiting New Zealand rail speeds ever since.
Not only that but whoever it was also decided that we would use a narrower gauge than the UK, not just limiting speeds but the range of territories from whom we could import gear and tech. Thus, when the Hutt Units needed replacing they had to some from Czechoslovakia (I think) and were too long (or high) for the Johnsonville line tunnels.

I agree about afternoon games. It is really hard to take children - future fans - to matches that don't finish to close to 10pm. There should be a better mix.
One of the reasons why the Phoenix did so well early on - lots of Sunday afternoon games.

I admit to 'not knowing where to look', which shouldn't be confused with 'unable to not stare'.
I was at an Equity meeting where Miranda Harcourt made a speech while breastfeeding her new baby. Would've been rude not to stare.

I have never thought so hard about the national anthem as when three Chinese guys stood behind me at the All Blacks vs Manu Samoa test in 1993 and bawled the bloody thing with all their hearts.
Des anyone else remember Chen & Bhaji from Skitz? An Indian and a Chinese bloke passionately supporting New Zealand at everything. "Come on broody New Zearand!" was one of the catch-phrases and "You unpatriotic Asian!" was another. That was 1993 too.

Er, Steve, respectfully: Fuck off. I wasn't given a sugar pill and I have never taken part in any trial and I know it worked (and works) for me.
I can go off meds for up to six months at a time but when I start not coping I can go back on them to mediate the extremes. They help me live my life when stress pushes me over the edge.

I sincerely hope that finally, Australia's first peoples will get an official apology from the government. Now that's Bennelong, long time coming.

I'll take this opportunity to repost a couple of Bill Direen anecdotes from here:
Nice to hear Bill sounding so well. I interviewed him once for Radio Active many, many moons ago, and he told me a couple of cool stories.
One was that ih the 70s he was a late night DJ for Radio Windy under the name Bill Diamond and that he was fired for suggesting that Michael Fowler and Patricia Bartlett were going to copulate in public to raise money for The Michael Fowler Centre.
The other story I remember was about The Bilders releasing a 7" single with a sealed plastic sleeve in the shape of a fish so to get the record out you had to gut it with a knife.

I couldn't believe it when my 18 year old nephew in his final year at secondary school was telling me about his mcjob at Subway . He has to start his shift at 5pm , gotta be there on time ...but when he gets there if its quiet he gets sent home for an hour or 2 and gets a phone call when it gets busy at which time he must return to resume his shift ending at 11pm - WTF . how f*** is that ? Further they are not eligible for a free subway food break until they have worked 5 hours straight .
Crikey, if I'd had a job like that when I was a kid it would've put me off work for life.
