  • Hard News: Claims,

it's just that there are times that it gets tedious to me and interesting threads get subsumed by the volume.

    Ditto.

I know I'm just a newbie but can I call "time" on this thread, ask you all to finish your drinks, and f#ck off home to your wives and kids?

(I'd call Theatre but that only seems to encourage another three pages of debate over whether 'Theatre' was a fair call)

  • Cracker: LOL,

Better than the story on the kids who didn't get hit by lightening though. That gets my vote for stupid story of the month

Really? I thought that was fascinating! How often do you see lightning almost kill 2 kids walking home from school in the rain? I mean they really were almost tasered out of existence.

I wonder if the media would have shown the footage if the kids had been zapped.

  • Random Play: Nothing, if not critical,

It is here you start to wonder, just what the role of the critics is: are critics responsible to the theatre company or to their own readers? Whose interests are they there to serve? I've always argued the latter.

It's no surprise that Mr Reid knows who his duty is to i.e. the reader. Such a shame that some other reviewers don't get it i.e. these English reviewers. I also read that piece on the weekend and my first thought was "Why don't they just buy a ticket and go along and review it?". Did the RSC have special guards on the doors, watching out for known critics? It seems bizzarre that they should accede to such a request from the RSC.

I used to write music reviews back in the '90s

Me too, student newspapers, eh? To pick up on your point Graeme

Musicians would sometimes send me albums asking me to comment on them, but only review them if I liked them. Huh?

I think its important to remember what your mum told you: "If you can't say anything nice, then don't say anything". I was happy to remain silent on local musos if they were crap on the basis that I only had a limited amount of column space so why waste it on crap? Better to inform readers of what's good than slagging something (unless there'e a burning reason to ie they just got a humongous NZOA grant, or an "overseas record contract").

Restaurant "reviews" often sound like they have been written by somebody who is working for the restaurant. It wouldn't surprise me if the "reviewer" paid to have it published.

They're not working for the restaurant, they ususally just know the owner or the manager. And they don't get paid, just fed well. When my sister opened her cafe she got a largely negative review (damning with faint praise), and yet 4/5 stars. Turned out the reviewer was chums with the competition.

  • OnPoint: Spoonfuls of sugar,

On another front, the Government is backing my loathing of houses (well, the insane property market, at any rate) by specifically targeting property speculators for auditing.

I had to chuckle at the TV News tonite. About how an average couple on $50+k a year will have a $300-400,000 lump sum when they retire, courtesy of Kiwisaver. My friend in Sydney bought a 2 bedroom cottage in Arch Hill in 2002 for $275k, with a mortgage of $250k. He sold it at the weekend for $550k. He now has a $300k lump sum courtesy of the property market. How is Cullen going to fight basic mathematics?
[FYI - he wasn't a speculator either, just another kiwi forced overseas to stay in their estrablished career]

At some point, they're just going to have to shoot them.

Ah yes, that ol' favourite of marxists everywhere:__ "When the revolution comes you lot will be lined up and shot!"__ Funny though, how both Stalin and Mao went after the intelligencia.

  • OnPoint: Spoonfuls of sugar,

You can't "squander" a surplus, and you can't "waste" a surplus, because if you did, it wouldn't be there, and it wouldn't be a fucking surplus. The whole point of a surplus is that they still have it.

Well you can actually, if you don't get too pedantic. Cullen announced the regional petrol tax [RPT] as a mechanism to fund electrification of Auckland Rail. They had hoped to have it electrified by 2011 in time for RWC but Cullen said that was a squeeze so it will be done by 2013. Two years after the RWC - what a frikkin joke, and blardy typical of bureaucrats.

Since we've been running significant surpluses for a number of years; why didn't they introduce the RPT 2 years ago? I think that's what people mean when they say Cullen has 'wasted' the surplus - he's wasted many opportunities to use it earlier.

  • Cracker: LOL,

And it can't be ALL about the element of surprise - or why would people buy comedy CDs and DVDs?

  • Hard News: What's on David Bain's iPod?,

Society has become grey. The legal system is black and white.
How can the two be reconciled? Who has new ideas on this?

Well, if we executed them immediately, without allowing any appeals, then it would all be over wouldn't it? Save a few bob on prisons too I bet!

  • Cracker: LOL,

No malice in my comment Michelle! It was just my immediate response (the line about if I wanted to get laid I'd have joined a band) to your comment, and from that sprung that old cliche attractive women use to explain why they marry someone ugly 'he makes me laugh'. But Jeremy is quite attractive really so I guess that was a bit obtuse. And then I thought I better finish off with a zinger, hence the joke in the bar, which in itself is a standard/cliche for comedians.

But has been noted earlier, if you have to explain the jokes then maybe you're not a comedian.

PS - Brendan; you're a nice guy. Well, I only met you once, but you were nice.

PPS - Re the Rove appearance. How many Aussies had seen that bit before? It is an Aussie show ...
