  • Hard News: About Chris Brown, in reply to Steve Barnes,

    he man needs the pillory.

However, the main purpose in putting criminals in the pillory was to publicly humiliate them. On discovering that the pillory was occupied, people would excitedly gather in the marketplace to taunt, tease and laugh at the offender on display.

Surely Hoskings subjects himself to public humiliation on a daily basis?

    A sucker for punishment?

    However...a win!

  • Legal Beagle: The Greg King Memorial…, in reply to Graeme Edgeler,

but this post really isn’t about David Garrett, so it would be cool if people could lay off the trawl through his history.

Ah, but, this post is about methods of reducing recidivism

Ironic that the father of the 'three strikes law' is, himself, a recidivist, (to use his own terminology), arsehole.

He has a history of offending, and being offensive.

He has a history of dishonesty.

Perhaps it may help in the effort to reduce violent reoffending if Garrett was asked what he thinks it would take to transform him from "arsehole" to 'reasonable human being'.

See if he has any insight into his offensiveness.

    This David Garrett?

    http://www.stuff.co.nz/auckland/local-news/6082942/I-was-a-roughneck-by-occupation-and-by-behaviour

Appearing in court on a forgery charge was hugely embarrassing, despite name suppression.

"I can still remember standing in court looking at the letter from the mother [of the dead child] in the spidery hand of an old lady and feeling like an absolute arsehole. It was really only then that it hit home to me that it had implications for people."

Has this leopard changed it's spots?

Graeme...is this the David Garrett you are referring to?

    David Garrett (9,426 comments) says:

This disabled access, and toilets for the disabled has to be the biggest load of shit in the past 20-30 years, and that’s saying something.

A little straw poll: who here has EVER seen a person in a wheelchair entering or leaving a public toilet? I have never seen one, ever.

How many people have seen a person in a wheelchair “accessing” [we used to just “go into”] a building? In my dim dark memory banks I think I might have seen one, once.

When I was an MP I remember noticing one disabled guy who was a regular user of the Koru club. Whenever I saw him I paid particular attention to whether he used the toilets – from a respectably distance of course! He never did.

does anyone know the % of wheelchair bound people in NZ? Whatever it is, a massive amount is spent on their potential “needs” – even in ludicrous situations such as that referred to by RRM @ 2.45.

  • Access: Safe schools for everyone, in reply to Berinthia Binnie,

The bureaucracy eats the money while the frontline starves.

Hah! And here I am taking timeout from writing an official complaint about our NASC.

We have had an uncomfortable relationship with this bureaucracy for some years.

    Finally come to a head.

So its onto 'word' and yet another letter that no-one will really read.

So, we will 'cut and paste' from some of the many other letters we have futilely writ over the past....shit...nearly a decade, and 'insert' most recent issue in the appropriate place.

Well, maybe not in the _most_ appropriate place....but in the text, somewhere.

    Done!

    Well done!

For what its worth....reading your comments over the past few days, your 'cut and paste' option would be fine....plus...Hilary's right....an oral submission to the SC from you would carry much weight.

  • Access: Safe schools for everyone, in reply to Hilary Stace,

In defence of my old school friend Catherine. It is a great victory for an opposition member to get such an inquiry as the government holds the majority on select committees so it is unusual such an opposition request is taken up by the committee.

Such a pity your old schoolmate couldn't continue her high profile advocacy on behalf of family carers and request, nay demand, a select committee (or higher) inquiry into the PHDAct (2) and the abominable Funded Family Care.

There is a plethora of statistics and documentation to support such an inquiry, not to mention a HRRT Decision AND two High Court Decisions AND two Appeal Court Decisions that clearly show the Government has blatantly trampled roughshod over disabled people and their family carers' rights. Then there's the UN Monitoring Committee's report....

And justified this breach of NZBORA and the HRA using false and misleading data.

So, Catherine...if you're reading this....send me a text/email and I'll be happy to put together a package for you to present to the Health Select Committee.

I am now completely cynical about such initiatives.

PS...what happened to IHC's complaint to the HRRT re: special education?

Mark...I have the BRANZ House Building Guide 1993.

    Best $24.95 I ever spent.

Please don't tell me it's now out of date.
