Does no-one read Fay Weldon anymore?

    Bogan = jet skis, surely?

What some surfers disparage as "goat boats". I may be wrong, but I've tended to take a fondness for that kind of dismissive jargon as an indicator of boganhood in itself. Like affirming one's appreciation of proper motorcycles by dissing trailbikes as "chook chasers".

Also Rosemary Sutcliffe is an interesting one as nearly all her protagonists were young-teen boys who ended up as exiles from their tribe, or outsiders only just within it, if memory serves.

That fits with the two books of hers I remember from my childhood. In a more adult vein, Mary Renault's scrupulously detailed ancient world novels really work for me. I guess it was the historical distance of her subjects that allowed her to portray explicitly gay and bi characters in mainstream best-sellers, while working in plain sight from her haven in stodgy apartheid-era South Africa.

Real bogans I,ve known, (including one with a doctorate), don’t seem to get with offshore sailing like I do.

Unlike regular beachgoers they used to be famous for putting their jeans on to go swimming.

    Flannery O'Conner
    Muriel Spark
    Patricia Grace
Tove Jansson (everything, the morph from moomins to the later autobiography and adult lit is like nothing else).

Love of metal is not the criteria here for Trotter and others suddenly excited about this concept.

    Cos, everybody hates a tourist...

People here are exhausted. They've been trying to sort their houses, their streets, their jobs and their families for going on five years now.

But munters are so last year! Look over here where the local Journal of Record has unearthed what might be a genuine case of lèse-majesté.

    I'm a Bogan and I have a doctorate.

You got a license to give 'em arseholes.

A real bogan or a real intellectual?

Whichever it is, I'd bet Chris Trotter would rate it as the sublime one-hand-clapping response of a Waitakere zen master.

Are bogans really that homogenous and undifferentiated as a social group? What about neo-bogans, quasi-bogans, wannbe-bogans, faux bogans, bogus bogans, used-to-be-a-bogan?

I'm picturing a row of wig stands in the ensuite adjoining Dr. Bogan's office, with mullets of varying cartoonishness. Those otherwise standard perusing-document-at-desk or fetching-tome-from-shelf shots can be fine-tuned to match the quote for whatever bogan issue happens to currently exercise the media.
