  • Hard News: The conversation they want to…,

It wasn't perfect – and there aren't yet many real backyard veges for sale – but it was a great start.

I was hoping you'd review this. It was pretty far from perfect and as a start it was pretty disappointing. They better get their shit together fast.

I'm not sure why I spent $20 on a membership. There were lots of grumbles from people that were actually there to buy food as opposed to grey haired first time parents in their late 40s who were there to show off expensive prams whilst yelling at Max/Luca/Ella/Sophie to be careful on the swing, darling!

I was there with lots of cash to buy lots of stuff. There was no stuff to buy. I ordered a coffee and after 20 minutes got my money back.

The competitive advantage was that it was going to be a real farmers' market. As it was, it was a pale mush of La Cigale and Kraftbomb. Totally crapful.

    pita breads, humus and falafel

Farmers are always producing that stuff.

This piece is about baclofen and is a great bit of writing.

  • Hard News: Dead Elephant Frenzy,

    It was Dead Elephant Frenzy.

Was it that or was it the fact that the zoo was free for the day? It was wasn't it? Perhaps the lack of prohibitive prices got out masses. It's bloody expensive.

Did else reading go? How was it?

We thought about buckling to the constant refrain: go to zoo! Go to zoo! Sounds like it was good to have skipped it, though.

I happened to eat breakfast the morning it was reported that the elephant was euthanised at a place with a television. Hearing John Banks talk about that elephant was certaintly entertaining. His oboe-like screech said that the elephant had qualities that many of us wish we could see more often in other people. I barely knew the guy sitting next to me but we were almost holding each other for support as tears streamed down our faces with laughter.

Did you know the zoo rents out its property for corporate events? Sha-weet!

  • Hard News: Let Us Spray: The Aftermath,

but it should be a fascinating show.

Do you mean that without any irony deficiency?

Im looking forward to the new Jetstar Media Awards... as something to avoid.

That would be a fantastic way to add more categories to the already bulging Qantas stable. Jetstar Media Award for Best Albino Jouranlist who writes about Spores and Fungi? The number of awards they have makes it seem as if Qantas has a vested interest in having its logo plastered on every publication in the country. A hackneyed comment, I grant you, but one worth repeating.

  • Hard News: Where your money goes,

Mothers Against Drunk Driving in Ontario got into all sorts of shit for living large.

And, after September 11 2001, the Red Cross was forced to do an about face and promise that all the donations that resulted from the attacks would go victims.

    Rick,

I think its really commendable that you've agreed to do what you're donig and I look forward to reading your post.

My question -- and I apologise if someone has already asked this -- is what arrangement exists between the charity, Adidas and the schools, if any? Is there a contract or an MOU? If it isn't either of those, what, if anything, is written down to manage the relationship between the three entities?

    Thanks again.

Neither derived any income from membership fees. Both organisations, which like to depict themselves as the voice of the silent majority, have no membership.

Oooh, nice. I'm going to use that.

Despite its extensive history of politicking, Maxim is indeed a registered charity.

    Oops, Maxim not Maximum.

Isn't its charitable purpose religious, though? Isn't that why they're members of the anti-bum sex brigade?

Their first value appears to be transcendence.

  • Hard News: Where your money goes,

    Really interestin Russell, thanks.

What about the fact that all religious institutions get charitable status? Mormons. Catholic schools. The Maximum Institute.

Remove their status and get them to pay rates and, like someone said, the Women's Refuge could cancel their annual appeal.

I think all charitable trusts are exceptions as it is to the rule against purpose trusts. So just eliminate their purpose.

All it would take is an Act of Parliament under the protection of s4 of the NZ Bill of Rights Act 1990.

The corporate aspect of Kids whatever thingy on TV is a lesser concern. They are using television after all to push their stuff -- a device which if used properly will make you fat, stupid and incapable of concentrating on anything except your next purchase.
