  • Hard News: Narcissists and bullies, in reply to Dismal Soyanz,

Maybe I'm being solipsistic, but I really wasn't bothered and couldn't see why anyone would pay attention and didn't notice until people pointed me toward his column (though I'm appreciative of Lilith's comment) because... well, does he matter? Does he have any distinguishing characteristics? At least John Roughan has ridiculous hair whereas his is merely dull.

Lilith, I just saw your comment under Rudman's column. Thank you very much.

Well, at Don Corleone's home, I know that I would have better food.

  • Hard News: How do you sleep?,

I sleep pretty well now. But while I was struggling with depression I slept terribly, 2 hours was a good night.

Anyone who has that, see your doctor immediately! It got to the stage where a lot of mental functions began to shut down, I reeked of ketones (spontaneous human combustion risk there, believe it or not), my skin began to crumble into a kind of wax in parts and even the act of picking up a cup was difficult - I felt like a rover on another planet: extend arm, open fingers, move further, close fingers, raise arm with cup...

Insomnia is not just a bad night's sleep if it becomes chronic.

    Sorry, off the soapbox now.

Also, never have anything to do with Massey University at Wellington.

  • Hard News: Narcissists and bullies,

Let me say that I've had a further communication from a senior police officer relating to previous matters that I believe was in good faith and well intentioned.

My impression is that certain individuals mean well, even senior ones, but that there is an entrenched culture, so certainly, ANY talk of "bad apples" has to be stamped on immediately.

Keep pushing awareness of rape culture, not just a few bad apples.

  • Hard News: How do you sleep?, in reply to nzlemming,

I'm never more than a metre from a notebook, but last night's "What if all caves were made of slate segmented into rectangular prisms?" really wouldn't have been worth the effort.

I also load episodes of Doctor Who onto my iPod and watch bits. It generally takes me off the usual mental ricochets and I can turn it off when it gets to a boring bit. All the meditation apps seem to take too long, but revisiting isolated bits of simple stories one liked seems to work rather better. I'm actually not being facetious - if you can't shut down thinking, it narrows one's attention without provoking more complex associations.

Don't read a new book before you go to bed, but maybe a an old favourite?

Also, if you've had absolutely no sleep the night before. That helps too.

  • Hard News: How do you sleep?, in reply to Ana Simkiss,

He never let me have a peaceful emergence from a Saturday night's sleep - I usually woke up screaming "Oh Jesus and fucking Cthulhu in a tuxedo and tutu riding in his sidecar, how could you ever be so banal?!"

Not a good way to start a Sunday morning.

I suggest that they replace his show with a few hours of a ten-Hertz infrasonic hum. I hear that it induces sleep.

As for the sleep, alas, insomnia is my family curse. No doubt some ancestor once called an old witch boring and she declared vengeance on us for generations. Now every bloody night, it's "Oh great, another slightly interesting idea that will keep me awake but is not quite the 'Eureka' that would get me out of bed to write down. Thanks, brain."

  • Hard News: Narcissists and bullies,

I'll credit Marshall with good, albeit late intentions. I was too freaked out to engage with him at the time, but I appreciate that he is struggling to find out what is right and proper.

I called for his resignation earlier, but I now think that he wants to do well. Still, he advanced through the ranks knowing about the attitudes that existed and didn't challenge them.

I remain very fearful of the police's ability to track down and intimidate their critics.

Even if it was a "prank", they knew how to find me at home. Think about that.

  • Hard News: Narcissists and bullies,

A person identifying themself as Police Comissionner Peter Marshall phoned me on my private land line early this afternoon, named me and said that they wished to talk about the Roastbusters case. I immediately said that I had no interest in talking to hjm about it and hung up.

I have no idea how this person found out my phone number and address and was able to identify me.

I was frightened. I don't know if it was his intent to intimidate me, but that was the effect.

I do not believe that this particular exchange is something to be kept private - instead, I think that it should be well known.

However, while my privacy regarding my identity and location has obviously been violated, I request that people do not ask for or offer any clues.
