  • Hard News: Trading Trade Me?,

I guess John Key's cast will just be the colourful fibreglass outer shell bit. These get cut off and replaced. I hope the smelly cloth wrapping and plaster of paris bits are binned as they should be.

I remember losing the end of a knitting needle down my cast and worrying what the doctor would say when he found it during the removal. Luckily he just used a really grunty cutter down both sides, peeled off the cast in two bits and binned them without examining them for illicit itch-scratching foreign objects.

  • Field Theory: Hey, no gang signs,

What is it exactly that Andrew Mehrtens is doing at the beginning?

He starts with the classic bogan "double-impedicus with arms rampant on field vert" . But then spoils his kiwi blokey image by going all dago and finishing with an "ulnar sheathed sinister with crossed dexter brachial elevated".

How vewy euwopean of you, Andy...

  • Hard News: A Weird Day in the Hood,

I have no insider knowledge but I tend to agree with a few of the other posters. The AOS does not normally "shoot first, ask questions later".

It seems they only shot at the guy when he jumped on the back of the (slow moving, nearly stationary) truck and pushed his gun through the rear cab window.
My take is that he then represented a target with a reasonable chance of a successful hit exhibiting a credible and immediate deadly threat to the truck driver.
Somewhere between that point and the final resolution, something has gone horribly wrong and an innocent bystander is left dead.
Ricochet? Direct Miss? Who the hell knows? And we probably won't know until the forensic investigation is completed...

All we can do now is wait (and try to imagine the grief that the Naitoko family are experiencing).

  • Hard News: It's not OK to just make…,

"they have no tools for dealing with frustrating situations"

"That's it! F*ck youse all. I'm off down the pub..." seems to be the all-purpose tool.

Forgive my (semi) facetious one-liner, but I actually used to see it a fair bit.

  • Up Front: Will Work for Foo,

The title made me think you were planning to be on the organising committee for the next Foo Camp.

  • Hard News: Conversation Starters,

I must admit I'm not very well read on anarchism but just musing on it always brings up this question for me...

If you overthrow authority and establish an anarchistic society, how do you stop authoritarian groups from forming and trying to fill the power void?

Don't the anarchists then have to form some sort of authority to stop authorities forming?

I'm sure ambitious/ruthless people would see anarchy as a perfect opportunity to form a group/gang/army and take control of resources with themselves at the top of the hierarchy.

Would an anarchy need to reduce population density to the point where cities were no longer viable? Otherwise any group of sufficient size then has the ability to pool resources and rule the roost.

As I say, all these questions may be answered in the "Anarchy 101" textbook, but I can't see obvious ones.

  • Up Front: The Home Straight,

I then had quite a run of 1100s and a Maxi which put me off English cars for life, always dripping oil and blowing heads

That's one of the the oldest I.T. jokes...

Q: Why didn't the British invent the personal computer?

A: Because they couldn't figure out how to make it leak oil.

    Ba-doum-tish!!

The blowing heads bit I'll leave up to your imagination...

  • Up Front: The Home Straight,

he just put his foot down and I just about dislocated my neck as this land whale surged forward like it was being chased by a japanese scientist

My brother and I shared an FD Vauxhall Victor called "The Beast" while at uni. With a 3.3L six under the hood, it could really get up and boogie (comparatively, back in the day.. I'm sure 90% of Jap imports would nuke it these days)

It was a good old donkey and ended its days ignominiously after being rear-ended while parked on the street overnight. The other guy must have been driving a Sherman tank 'cos "The Beast" was totaled and teh offender took off and was never caught.

My brother got no end of speeding tickets. Being the boring, sensible one, my license remains free of speeding offences to this day...

  • Up Front: The Home Straight,

Here is my Canterbury Plains driving story.

We were driving from Dunedin to Picton overnight to catch the morning ferry after the closing "ceremony" (piss-up) of the 'Varsity Winter Tournament @ Otago.
My four teammates crammed into our hired Fiat Uno were all in a drunken snoring stupor. I was a sober but tired driver. There was heavy fog. The only sign of forward progress was the white lines and roadside reflectors popping out of the gloom, flashing in the headlights and then disappearing behind. It was kind of hypnotic. No traffic. No conversation. Broken radio. You can guess what's coming, can't you?

I distinctly remember being asleep and thinking to myself, "There is something I really should be doing..."

Luckily the sound of the tyres going into the gravel on the right hand side of the road woke me up and I managed to return us to the correct side of the road.

Through some amazing sheer blind luck I'm still here to tell my cautionary tale today.
