  • Hard News: Meanwhile in Iraq ...,

If you are looking for bad news on Iraq, you will find it. If you are looking for postive news, it's also there. Depends which side of the fence your are on.

  • Hard News: The standing-still sweep,

I'm kinda glad (in a selfish way) that Andrew Williams won on the North Shore. Now I won't have 747s overhead every 5 minutes landing at Whenuapai. I just hope it's not a pact with the Devil though.

  • Hard News: Deriving satisfaction from…,

The way this new christian party, and the previous Destiny Party, has been handled is not unusual in christian circles. If my memory serves me correctly, Destiny stated when they formed that 'God told them they would be the government in 5 years'. Therein lies the problem. They use God to justify their lack of logic and reason and to stroke their very large egos. A dangerous combination historiically.

  • Hard News: Free Man,

Kowhai. I guess I am of the generation that links our flag to all that we hold dear as a country...it symbolises who we are. I find it difficult, like many people over the age of 50 or 60, to hear of our flag being burnt. So I just wonder what values does Zaoui actually hold. He comes here wanting to live in freedom and yet despises the symbol of that freedom.

  • Hard News: Free Man,

I noted an interesting comment from a listener on Leighton Smith this morning (that's 'outed me'...yes I listen to his show sometimes...). He stated that Zaoui was involved in an anti-American demonstration last March. Not so 'bad' in itself, and that he spoke publicly there (also not so 'bad'). However, the concerning thing for me was that he just stood by 'unprotestant' as the NZ flag was burnt. Seems rather incongruess to what he states publicly about our fair country.

  • Hard News: Friday funnies, mostly,

Yeah Craig, the 'Nuclear Power alternative' statements from George Bush are probably just a broadside at the Chinese who are building coal-powered stations every other day. The US certainly wasn;t thinking about NZ. But we do need debate on how we progress in our power generation neeeds. The Green's and other 'parties' to this must be willing to compromise our environment at acceptable levels.

I recently had a coffee at a Starbucks in Manila...I think it was civet coffee without the beans.

  • Hard News: Not Okay,

The campaign against family violence that I'm part of launches at Parliament today.

Good on you Russell and the others for fronting up to this issue. I do have a concern, though, that celebreties fronting these issues sometimes make the issue somewhat 'cool' for the moment but long-term the lustre disappears. It can also be a credibility issue. Celebrities often take more time to convince the public that they are worthy and that can detract from the issue at hand (take Bono for example).

Anyway, probably a petty argument considering the import of the issue. I just hope that with the Family Violence problem that we don't get into a over-reactive dob-in programme.
