  • Up Front: Well, Read Women, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

none of whom are hard to find in any decently stocked public library or bookstore (new or secondhand).

Probably a bit late to happen upon any copies that were "enhanced" by rogue borrower Joe Orton. Dorothy Sayers seems to have been a favourite target.

If we're still adding recommendations, I enjoyed Elizabeth Knox's Wake a lot (sci-fi/horror set near Nelson).

Wake struck me as the kind of thing Neil Gaiman might just manage if he gets over pandering to 'inner kids'.

    eighties production values

That Cars and Girls clip appears to feature the rather wonderful Photoing on Car. A curious portrayal of capitalist decadence from Gang of Four era China, it was sold in NZ in the early 70s.

  • Speaker: Protesting private prisons, in reply to Alfie,

That old private companies do it better mantra is getting a little tired.

I remember a late 80s cartoon showing a guy being led from his office in handcuffs, while in the foreground a receptionist explains to a caller that he's investigating opportunities in prison privatisation. Perhaps everything old is new again.

    Grandma's, My Aunty had a Thunderbird :)

My bad. Aunty didn't live in Christchurch by any chance? When my brother was a Ford apprentice there a woman owner would bring her late 60s T-bird in for service. Because she was such a sedate driver 90% of the necessary decoking could be achieved by a few blatts around the perimeter of Hagley Park. The lads jostled for that job.

  • Polity: Too much to swallow on the TPP, in reply to Paul Campbell,

What I'm not hearing from Labour is whether or not they will withdraw from the treaty if it is signed by National and they subsequently regain power.

They made the occasional sympathetic noise over Ruth Richardson's savaging of benefits, but never offered any redress when it was in their power. Which is why they were so effectively sidelined by National's token window dressing in the last budget.

(Why is it that it is so incredibly difficult to access articles on Stuff? Surely a search for Rod's columns should give a list in date order descending from the last one, not random stuff from 2009. As the only worthwhile part of the whole paper a little more support would not go astray.)

Your link gave me what effectively is yet another plug for Whittaker's chocolate posing as a news story. I suspect that partly answers the question of why finding the thin vein of real stuff has gotten so tricky.

    Tove Jansson's The Summer Book

Notes from an Island revisits the same territory. Those who found The Summer Book too short won't be disappointed.

Sun City from 1974 was a real surprise. Set in Miami, where Jansson had holidayed, her local characters are so intricate and believable you could be forghiven for thinking it was her home town.

I rebuilt one of my own ragtop Triumph in later years.

The Triumph Herald, of the infamously primitive swing axle rear suspension, which sadly nobbled its promise of being a sports car on a bogan budget. Hark the Herald axles swing, as they once said in the trade.

That Vitesse of your auntie's was still pretty ace though Sofie.
