Keir - I agree the rhetoric could do with toning down and I also agree with robbery's assessment of Judith Tizard - she works hard, has achieved a lot and deserves credit for lots of things, including her attention to indigenous rights and, I have to say, open source software.
However, it cuts both ways. The first hand accounts of the meeting between the two Ministers and interested parties a couple of weeks ago showed it did not go well mainly because whilst most in the rooom came ready to compromise (including someone representing the NZOSS) Judith Tizard did not. Add to that the claims from her of "hysteria" and talk of "child porn" and you get a fairly toxic environment.
I also note that according to yourself only people with a strong background in fine arts and its history were competent to talk about Copyright. That's ridiculous.
There are lots of perspectives being aired on this thread, most of which have added to the value of the debate.

First: sincere thanks to Stuart Coats and mark kneebone for showing up to tell their side of the story.
Sure, it would be nice if he answered the question about frivolous take down notice fines or showed some movement towards other peoples' POV. Right now the attempts to "find a workable solution" seem to be doing it all on his industry's terms.
Which leads me to the following conclusion. The recording industry has a technical solution for identifying people sharing files, similar to that used in the USA. However, it is not accurate enough to really know whether the sharing is legitimate or not. Therefore, they want to be able to issue sheaves of take down notices without having to suffer any consequences.
Could be that this is a wild and inaccurate guess, anyone care to comment?

Well, he was. Don't you remember all the "it's our money" calls that Cullen seemed deaf to for so long. Turns out maybe he was right, eh?
And to be fair he *has* been predicting a series of deficit years, just not so deep or so long. I would also note that the headlines of recent days have mainly been based on "worst case" scenario forecast, which suits Cullen right now.

Of course, there must be a difference between capital and earnings. Capital is going out, earnings are coming back.
Another long bemoaned weakness in the NZ economy is the lack of investment in overseas markets from NZ. The ratio of incoming versus outgoing investments has been worrying folks like the NZ Institute for some time. Again, the Cullen fund goes some way to redressing that imbalance.

Che - that's right. One of the lessons learnt from the Asian crisis of the 1990's was to shore up savings and overseas investments.
Looks to me as though National are planning to borrow from the fund on order to have their tax cuts, sorry, infrastructure investments. I guess this raid was bound to happen but I did expect it to be later rather than sooner.
