there's a fair whack of interesting/ eh? stuff that came out of former Soviet states. Dos-Mukasan were in Kazakhstan - this clip is 26 minutes or so of sorta downbeat surf/ ska (really).
the opening few minutes feature some cool, black and white, narrated footage of the life and times in wherever the hell it was they were living with an odd emphasis on scientific equipment then the party really kicks off at 11.50 mins. a dour bunch but I'm sure they were the life and souls after few fermented yak milks, and check out the venue at 23 and a bit mins, sweet lighting. -

Hard News: Friday Music: The Wizards of…, in reply to Russell Brown,
INXS seemed to have been quite a fixture among the fringe scene. back when I was playing (badly) we tripped over to Sydney to play with Deadly Hume (feat early doors H&C's percussionist Greg Perano) and they were pretty hardened rock and rollers but remained good mates with the INXS fullas. they were pretty famous by then so they didn't catch up as much as they once did.
was a cool scene though (late 80s), still loads of bars to play even if the standard was extremely variable - one particular fave was L shaped so you'd be playing away to an empty space while the punters leaned on the bar at the other end. then there were those with volume limiters that just cut dead on you.
also remember a lot of Flying Nun copyists - to the point of playing covers which seemed odd for some reason - but the band scene was so big there was plenty of good stuff among the rubbish (Louis Tillet and the Aspersion Cast, I'm yawning at you) and the almost comically macho. -
I'll play... got a bit of time on my hands since being taken out back of the Herald to be banged on the head with a rock.
I couldn't name top tracks of 2015 - that new fangled music hurts my head - but have made some sweet vinyly scores of late. if there's a quality outcome to not having to get up of a morn' all regular like it's being freed to play mo' gigs.
So, I found a banged up copy of Diane Renay's popcorny Navy Blue 45 a few months back which tickled my fancy, so I've been keeping my eye out for her. Odd career, she seems to only sing about servicemen, anyway I found her album (in glorious, loud mono) at Groovy yesterday and clocked this number.
Was also jazzed to find a latter day Jay and the Americans LP. I've got a major soft spot for layered harmonies over pastoral rock styles. Most of the album is pants but I dig this one:
The Guitar Ramblers looks like one of those stringsploitation LPs that were banged out daily during the 60s/ 70s to live out their days on the junk shop circuit, but this one has a gem. Surf!
