  • Hard News: And The Mission Is?,

Coleman made mention of the fact that under National TVNZ would have to make ratings data available, and I have to say I like that. (as sad as it would make me)

I took this to be a reference to RNZ's policy of not revealing its internal ratings data, nor participating in the commercial radio ratings.

"Sensing Murder" won it's slot in all demographics last night.

  • Hard News: Big Norms,

Is it just me or do I detect a certain partisaness when I hear Scott Campbell and Duncan Garner reporting on Parliament?

It often seems to me that Scott Campbell wants to be Duncan Garner.

    When he grows up, perhaps.

...pehaps its a little unkind, but the phrases "shrunken Duncan" and "mini-me" have been muttered in reference to Scott. Poor chap had a nasty run-in with a drunken lout at the Cross recently. It's not nice when someone takes to your face with a bottle just cos you're on the telly.

  • Hard News: Travelling Gravely,

I enjoyed the Media 7 panel discussion. I have a lot of time for Phil Kitchin as a reporter. It said a lot for the man's journalistic integrity that his efforts to expose the horrendous historical actions by some cops against women had no impact on his relationship with serving police officers. At a time when the Police were in the middle of a PR disaster (to borrow a term), he was still getting stories from cops all around the country.

Russell, you need to get Phil Wallington to do something about your lighting. The harsh key light does no-one any favours. I realise its a small studio, and the studio lighting people are worried probably worried about light spilling onto the background, but you need (deserve) to have diffused lighting on your face. It wouldn't take much to have some soft flourescent or LED fixtures put up, and the could be flagged to reduce any spill onto the background.

  • Hard News: Tragedy into Crisis?,

I don't know many who would have assumed they shouldn't expect help, and I'd previously dismissed the few I knew who did think that way as cranks with issues.

I guess in my case, I don't expect immediate help from the emergency services. I understand that there are limited resources, that there are circumstances that may mean I will not get help for some considerable time. That does not make my need any less important to me.

The shooting Navtej Singh reminded me of a similar murder near Palmerston North in 2001. In this case, a woman was shot, but managed to call police. It was unclear where the murderer was, so police waited until the AOS was able to cordon the farm property. The victim bled to death, all the time while on the phone with the emergency call-taker. The call was played at the trial.

  • Hard News: Too Good to Be True,

I witnessed Sabin's school presentation recently. Yes it did include a number of shocking examples, mainly taken from the law enforcement sources in the US and Australia. There was a section devoted to the physical effects that meth produced on the brain - a series of telling computer animations that was voiced by Mike McRoberts. The presentation focussed on P, but also mentioned alchohol and cannabis.

During discussions a bit later on, he suggested that random drug testing gave an effective "out" to students who were looking for an excuse to not partake when offered by their friends - something like "Shit no! I've got a trip to Maardi Cup (insert any other sporting or cultural trip here) coming up. If I get tested, I wont be able to go."

The whole presentation struck me a little bit like a more graphic version of Reefer Madness, or those STD films that were shown to soldiers when they were being sent overseas.

  • Hard News: Yes we canny,

I've been baffled by Campbell Live's recent dip into dumbed down articles as well. Campbell himself looks uncomfortable presenting them; he puts on a facial expression that suggests he knows it's a crap story, but that it's been foisted on him and he knows it's crap, but has to just trudge on stoically.

I dunno. Given that its his name on the show, that the EP is his good friend Carol, and the amount of money he makes (highest paid person on NZ TV ?) I would have thought that he has a LOT of say in what goes to air.

  • Hard News: Yes we canny,

'Eye to eye 'on Maori TV sunday at 6:30 pm is always fun,Craig.

I think Eye To Eye is a TVNZ production, (first screens on TV1 on a Sunday morning), and is replayed on Maori TV. The sunday morning slot may be unfortunate, but I understand it still outrates the 'prime-time' Maori TV replay by a factor of ten.

  • Hard News: All this and more,

It seems to me that Colin made a rather dopey assertion (and one often repeated around here) that DPF - and The Herald itself -- were perfectly entitled to respond to. Then again, I don't really see the point of trying to rationally engage with people in the grip of a conspiracy theory.

The Herald will never be shy about defending itself.

I would have thought a more accurate analysis of the Herald's editorial stance would include the selection, position and prominence of stories as well as editorials.
