  • Hard News: Media Mathematics,

I'm sure <grin> Graeme Edgler will correct me if I misquote him, but he makes the point that, while he knows NZ First got 4.07% of the party vote in 2008, he stills checks the figure every time before he writes it.

  • Hard News: Media Mathematics, in reply to Luke Williamson,

    “You’re just being pedantic.”

Thankfully there are still pockets of NZ that see pendantry as a positive trait. Office of the Clerk of the House of Representatives, I'm looking at you.

  • OnPoint: Association of Community…,

    (almost a threadjack I know)

New on the Ministry of Health website, they are listing their meetings w/ Big Tobacco. Recent meetings include discussion removal of power walls.

This is required under a treaty, Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. I suspect all Ministries (and Ministers?) will be obliged to report meetings. Must ask.

  • Hard News: Finally, the Teapot Tape?,

Al Thompson of Scoop has tweeted (@althecat) that he has taken legal advice. They have published, so presumably the advice he has been given is along the same lines as Steven Price (link given above by Merc) who strongly rebuts any wrongdoing in linking to the file/s.

he told me that if you dry your tobbacco and offer it through an honesty box system at a roadside farm gate stall, you are not breaking any law, apparently

Um, the S68A exemption prohibits 'sale or other disposition to any other person'. Kinda rules out that idea. See S68A(2)(c)(ii).

Good pieces in the Sunday Star-Times yesterday (not online as far as I can tell) by Anthony Hubbard on plain packaging and Big Tobacco.

The Tobacco-growing Industry Act (referred to in the licence/license above) was repealed in 1987.

S68A of the Customs and Excise Act contains a specific exemption for tobacco grown for personal use as long as it at your own private home, for your own use (no sharing!), and no more than 15kg/year of manufactured tobacco. (As opposed to weight of leaf.)

I find the amount incredible - over 40g/day.

  • OnPoint: Association of Community…, in reply to Rich of Observationz,

prohibition is not on anybody’s agenda

Rich, look at the context, that is from Feb 2006, at the very start of Hone Harawira's political career and immediately after the 2005 election. I stand to be corrected but I don't such a bill ever being submitted in the ballot. Certainly it wasn't captured by I/S's excellent 'In The Ballot' resource.

I compare that with the Nov 2010 report of the Maori Affairs Select Committee in their inquiry into tobacco which says (unanimously, bottom of page 10):

[W]e do not believe that the majority of New Zealanders support prohibition as the mechanism for reaching this goal, and so we have
not recommended it to the Government at this time.

Harawira was a major player for pushing for the inquiry, working on it and bringing it to a conclusion. Yes, Turia, Lees-Galloway and others too.

Of related interest, the New York Times's Public Editor

I read Jay Rosen @jayrosen, who teaches journalism at New York University. He responds here to the piece by the NYT's Brisbane, and includes reaction by others and by Brisbane himself.
