  • Hard News: Graceless Islanders,

Or a government funded addiction service who sacked two workers for taking prescribed antidepressants.

I just think that's terrible - and nobody seems to be interested. To me it's just as bad as sacking someone in a wheelchair because it doesn't match the decor.

  • Hard News: Graceless Islanders,

If I wanted to agonise over every ingredient, I'd have made my own at home.

    My thoughts exactly!

parts of the Auckland CBD I wouldn't dream of setting foot in after dark

Where? K-Rd? Fort St? I wouldn't wander through Myers Park alone but that's a park full of glue sniffers, not a street. Even that's fine if there's two of you..

I think that one of the problems with rural NZ is that there are few interesting jobs, which leads to an exodus of smart young people, which in turn leads to an unbalanced community. This happens to some extent in a lot of places, but especially here where the economy is too small to sustain much in the way of creative or knowledge based employment outside Auckland and Wellington.

I'd also think that the enforcement of the drinking age is a bit counterproductive. When I was a 16/17 year old in England, the drinking laws were laxly enforced and underage drinking was tolerated *provided* one was well behaved. Also, pubs with a big youth clientele were more likely to ID you (as they attracted the attention of the cops), so us youngsters tended to go to quieter adult pubs - which also helped encourage responsible behaviour.
With strict enforcement, teenagers don't have this choice and will get booze somehow (and how do you stop 18 or 21 year olds buying beer for younger people - dope is illegal at any age but easy enough to get hold of, after all) and drink it in any suitable unsupervised venue.

<irony> Christchurch is full of white people. White people are genetically prone to violence - this is shown by the way they managed to wipe out tens of millions of each other through war and genocide in the 20th century.

Consequently it's unsurprising that Christchurch is prone to bigger fights and Auckland, where the white population is diluted by brown and Chinese people, is less so. </irony>

  • Hard News: Out of the Groove,

and there are still volunteer components of those stations now, specialist shows etc

My impression, and I may be totally off-beam here, was that bFM only had the one paid presenter (Mikey Havoc) and the rest were all volunteers?

  • Hard News: Out of the Groove,

as I'm not in the US, they are going to prevent me using their website because of licensing

I'm thinking more and more that some sort of service that lets you choose where you access the net from would work. (If you work for a global company you may have seen something like this this already - when you VPN to an overseas based office, your regionally targeted advertising changes).

  • Hard News: Out of the Groove,

Is there any need for a national youth radio network in NZ? Doesn't the b-net cover it nicely?

I think Auckland is well served with bFM, George and all the community stations. The rest of the country isn't really. I've tried to find something good to listen to in Wellington and it isn't really there, surprisingly.

How much would an alternative music-based (I prefer that term to "youth") station cost if it was done outside RNZ cost structures and on a semi-volunteer basis? I reckon a million + transmission costs would cover a few professional broadcasters, admin staff, promotions, etc. Or is there a huge RIANZ licensing fee to pay?

    Russell - you must know?

Idi Amin lived in exile in Saudi Arabia, not France, after the Tanzanian Army ended his rule of Uganda. (He was a Muslim convert)
