And what exactly is the disturbing mutant doctor all about?

That is truly disturbing. A suit with jandals? Tsk tsk.

Has there been any increase in the 76 confirmed cases worldwide, and 20 confirmed swine flu deaths (all in Mexico), that Wikipedia is reporting? That seems to be largely based on CNN & AP sources, and while the number of "attributed" deaths and "possible" cases keeps on rising, I don't think I've seen any increase in the confirmed figures.

Jan, Bob's phrasing sounds spammy and you'll notice it's different than how most posters here contextualise links. Put that together with it being post number one, and my instinct agrees with others. Add in reports that the domain registration is similar to that earlier link and I'm nearly 100% sure.

I don't usually leap in like that, but as with Sacha, my spammy-sense was tingling, and it seemed in particularly poor taste for someone to try to scam a bit of Google-ad revenue out of a situation where (pandemic or not) people are actually dying.

Sorry Jan if I was a bit confrontational. 3410's comment seemed to me to carry a sceptical "Wot's all this, then?" connotation, rather than promoting it, and Stephen's & Mark's replies carried that further. When first-time poster "Bob" popped up later with a post that carried all the hallmarks of spam, and for a site that's obviously related to one which we had been questioning earlier in the thread, it seemed highly unlikely to have been someone who had been following the thread with genuine interest.

I'm not so sure. That site looks a lot like something somebody cooked up to game Google ad revenue.

That was my thought, and when 3410 first posted the link with the question "Who are these people?", I think that 3410 was making the same implication. The site has no information about professional or institutional credentials, and if someone "just happened to stumble across it" there wouldn't seem to be any reason to think it any more informative than known credible sites.

It wouldn't be the first time that someone has turned swine into spam.

Hey Bob, I'm a bit confused: by "found this site" do you mean "built this site" or "was paid to promote it"? And by "informative" do you mean "exploitative"?

Well, I had tended to agree that the media coverage hadn't been completely over the top, but then I made the mistake of turning on TV3 News. "The spread of Swine Flu symptoms"? By which you mean "Random people around the country with a bit of a cough"? Sheesh, this swine has jumped the shark.

Facebook friends should not be stealing jokes. Just sayin'.

Sorry Giovanni, hadn't seen your fb comment until now. It was the combination of swearing and planes in Rich's comments that trigger mine.

SOME RANDOM MOUTH WHO HAPPENED TO BE ON THE PLANE! WHAT A FUCKING GREAT IDEA!

I've had enough of this motherfucking flu on this motherfucking plane!

Once again, it is the poor level of reporting that gets me. Even the splendid RB states that 80 people in Mexico have died from this but it looks like only 20 have been confirmed as being the victims of this actual strain of flu.

In this situation, I wonder what the best source of ongoing information would be? Does the WHO maintain a regularly-updated site, or just put out occasional media releases? Will the informal system of check & balances ensure that the Wikipedia article maintains only the most sober and verifiable information?
