You all suck. Smiley. You've missed the chance to say: Jail is the Crime. Why? Revenge mentality is dumb. I spent 8 years of my professional life in jails in various roles. We DO NOT NEED jails. The deterrence argument is proven rubbish. For the tiny number of dangerous humans we need humane mental health facilities. Read Prof John Pratt, Contrasts in Punishment.

All good. I got on my high horse. Would be nice to hear your views on the issue nonetheless.

PS Your website still has no mechanism as far as I can see that sends me an email if someone adds to the discussion. It's a pain checking back manually every now and then.

  • Hard News: Orcon IRL on Journalism: The Video,

Thanks Russell Wrong of you to assume I was "just reacting" and no I wasn't willfully misrepresenting. Perhaps you would like to address the substance of what I am saying about much of modern journalism. ie The all too common view that there is no truth which leads to celebrity "journalists" who think they are entertainers. These errors are certainly prevalent in too many RNZ journalists I have spoken to. Please note I am not necessarily including Guyon here.

I'm guessing Hilary that the answer is in the word "trace". The amounts are small enough to measure by not appreciably larger than background radiation. That said, I was taught in med school that there is no known safe dose of radiation - a bit like alcohol and Chernobyl Reds.

  • Hard News: Orcon IRL on Journalism: The Video,

Guyon “push for answers too soon” ??? FFS. And the idea of gladiatorial entertainment is exactly what’s wrong with journalism today. This is intimately related to the postmodern notion so common in modern media that truth is relative. And then we get “as an interviewer you’re looking for a reaction”. No. As an interviewer you are looking to find the truth. You guys have forgotten that it’s about finding and reporting truth. Don’t make the postmodernist Gower the Clown error where he says he’s too busy to find the truth so just provides entertainment and tries to be tough on “both sides”. I’ve spoken to “journalists” in the last week who still believe in the “two sides” crap. And let’s please not forget it’s not about you, it’s about teamwork. You can’t “dig deep enough” all by yourself. http://pantograph-punch.com/asking-the-right-questions-patrick-gower
And why not the old “You’re refusing to answer, so let’s stop it there.”

  • Hard News: Orcon IRL 5: Media and Journalism,

Wouldn't it be nice if the conference agreed that the single biggest media problem, and by extension that of the world, has been the childish attachment to relativism - thus a journo's job is not to find and report truth, but to report "sides" and give them equal weight? This stupidity is neatly encapsulated by Patrick Gower who states he is an entertainer in a pantograph interview.

Best person should get the job. I've seen ZERO sensible comparison of candidates in NZ press, Pity. Shame on you all.

  • Polity: Post "post-truth" post,

Rob you are wrong. A journalist's job is to tell the truth and challenge lies. Lucy is also wrong thinking this is not possible. I smell the postmodernist fallacy that truth is relative and that bias cannot be handled within a science or journalistic community.
